From legendary techno don, veteran producer and long time Far Out contributor Kirk Degiorgio, comes ‘Sambatek’. Sourced from classic samba drum breaks and organic percussive elements, this album transposes the essence of ‘ritmos do Brasil’ into the late night peak time techno soundscape Kirk has enriched for over 20 years. A collection of pulsating, evolving and unrelenting techno stormers, ‘Sambatek’ is accompanied by remixes from a worldwide cast of established and up & coming producers appearing on the Far Out imprint for the first time.

As ever Kirk Degiorgio brings his A game to this release for the Far Out family. From the dark, ethereal, Berlin-esque sonics of the album opener, to the housey Detroit-infused stabs of ‘Vidigal’ and the booming warehouse rave ethic of ‘Borel’, this album showcases Kirk’s passion for these two traditionally disparate musical genres coalescing into the symbiotic rhythmic experience of ‘Sambatek’.

With a career spanning over two decades Kirk has come far from his upbringing in East London. Creator of the label ART (Applied Rhythmic Technology) in the 80’s, Kirk released the early works and productions from B12, Carl Craig, Aphex Twin, The Black Dog, Photek, Stasis amongst others. Kirk’s own productions and remixes throughout these past two decades have been also released by such labels as Mo Wax, Planet E, Ubiquity, Versatile, Peacefrog and many more.
Keeping intact his soul boy roots Kirk reflects a Detroit sound incorporated with funk, jazz and soul influences which has resulted in a series of projects working under such aliases: As One (which made the Muzik top 30 in 1994/95), Offworld (Full LP on Far Out), Esoterik, Elegy and Super-A-Loof. Remixing artists as varied as Azymuth, Coldcut, 4 Hero, Innerzone Orchestra, Papo Vasquez and many more proving his musical spectrum has no boundaries. 

This project is accompanied by remixes from BNJMN, Rick Wilhite, Jonas Kopp, NX-1 and Spatial, all of whom are new and welcome to the label’s roster. Kirk Degiorgio’s project will be showcased during his world tour in the summer of 2013, where he will be performing the tracks on various stages across the globe, accompanied by female percussionists.

“SambaTek was another wonderful opportunity for me to work with Far Out Recordings and explore the label’s deep Brazilian connections. Whilst my Offworld project was a collaboration with the legendary Azymuth band, SambaTek is a collision of traditional Brazilian percussion tracks and state-of-the-art techno. I've always loved Brazilian rhythms - from heavy batucada breakdowns to gentle melancholy sambas. Inacio is a splendid percussionist from the escola do samba of Padre Miguel and it was a real treat to work with his talented percussion band. The rhythms used are traditional and we both wanted to keep them that way. My task was to interpret the language, the shifting patterns and grooves of Brazilian music and translate these into a modernist form, creating unique combinations with the four-to-the-floor beats of classic techno. These superb musicians did a great job and it was truly a pleasure to work on this project for Far Out. Xhin's debut album on Stroboscopic Artefacts, 'Sword', showcases the breath of his vision. As the second full-length release on Stroboscopic Artefacts, 'Sword' stretches the remit of the label's identity ever further.
Produced and recorded in Singapore, Xhin plucks sounds from the outer edges of electronic music and fuses them together. Xhin's approach revels not only in a hybrid sound palette but it's also an album designed for multiple contexts. It’s a record typified by duality. Xhin's process seamlessly traversed analogue and digital production, and 'Sword' harbours electronic music that ranges from brutal club sounds to deep and delicate murmurs.
It's clear from the way the album is crafted and layered that Xhin is a skilled sound designer. The tracks seem to have been worked on from a 360o perspective. His muse? The void. But rather than soundtracking the abyss, 'Sword' is a strategy, an attempt to negotiate a way out. Part of the answer that he proposes abandons the shadowy recesses of melancholy in search of the ecstatic. 'The Secret Closet' depicts a dream state in frosted tones and icy ambience that is returned to again with the discordant jangles of 'Inside'. 'Wood' picks up the motive once more. At the kernel of 'Wood' is melody that Xhin composed on the piano and then digitally processed into a state of bliss.
However, 'Sword' refuses to languish in a romantic hinterland and the ambience is off set by aggressive, weighty cuts. 'Fox and Wolves' is Xhin ripping into any nostalgia that opening track 'The Secret Closet' promised. Equally 'Teeth' gnashes and writhes over a bed of deep beats. 'Vent' is fortified with metallic rasps and built from the droning aggression that characterized Xhin's early Stroboscopic Artefacts releases. Even at its darkest, its most violent, 'Swords' envisions the club as a place of refuge. Proposing a collective acknowledgement of the void, where dancing fends off its grip, and realization is paradoxically escapist.
'Sword' could not be more aptly titled. Xhin creates allusions with track titles that snatch images from a post-modern fairytale: woods, wolves, foxes, wardrobes. Xhin appropriates the fairytale hero's sword and the weapon becomes symbolic of a struggle, a tool against the void. A way out of dystopia. Journeying to the crispy cusp of experimentation and musical questioning, 'Sword' is one of those rare creations that emerge when a producer has absolute artistic freedom. The 10 tracks navigate parallels and paradoxes allowing Xhin to cut a deft mark across the album format.

He makes you move but opens your mind, letting you accept a wider spectrum of music and at a level of quality that sets the bar for you thereafter. You realise it is not the floor that dictates what a DJ plays but a DJ like Norman dictating how the people might dance. 
As with any passionate music lover, a time comes when a logical progression is made from DJing to production. His Debut EP took place in 2006, with a Deetron collaboration on the highly respected Sino techno label. Ben Sims proceeded to playlist 2 tracks in his Escapism Pt 2 mix CD and charted by Ken Ishii and Christian Smith. A slew of releases followed on labels such as Plus Tokyo, Funk Me, Crayon. He is currently working with Chicago legend K-Alexi with a remix of “You Are” on Orlando Voorn’s Divine imprint and is part of the “5Kings” collective in his quest to push the musical boundaries further and wider. His latest “Forbidden Planet”E.P has received support from Laurent Garnier, Fabrice Lig, Santiago Salazar, Vince Watson, Dave Mothersole among other notable artists. 
Norman’s aim as a musician is simple: to add to the myriad of good music in existence. For someone who has had the gift of music for so long, it is only about time to give it all back..
