These Mountain Blues

The Townes Blues EP is a new release from Scottish collective Norrie McCulloch & The Fireside Sessions. Recorded on 5th January 2017 it features songs written by Texan songwriter Townes Van Zandt alongside an alternate take of an original song ‘Mountain Blues’ a track inspired by a visit to Townes’ graveside during a stateside road trip that inspired McCulloch’s 2016 album ’These Mountain Blues’.
The original idea for this project was first spawned years ago when McCulloch found a rare copy of a Townes Van Zandt songbook. The idea now fully realised by bringing together Dave McGowan (Teenage Fanclub/Belle & Sebastian), Shane Connolly (Alasdair Roberts/Issho Taiko Drummers), Iain Thompson (Sound Guy Extraordinaire), Stuart Kidd & Marco Rea (The Wellgreen) alongside McCulloch.

Norrie McCulloch is a Scottish singer songwriter. His latest album "Bare Along The Branches" is out now on Black Dust Records.

Norrie’s 2016 album “These Mountain Blues” was written during a US road trip from Austin, Texas to Nashville, Tennessee and recorded live to analogue tape within a 15th century building in Stirling, Scotland alongside his frequent collaborator - Dave McGowan (Teenage Fanclub / Belle & Sebastian) and Stuart Kidd and Marco Rea (The Wellgreen).

These Mountain Blues gathered four and five star reviews with Maverick magazine saying that “Influences are fused together on what could be McCulloch’s opus-majus” and The Iain Anderson Show on BBC Radio Scotland featuring the record as album of the week. 

Aside from recording and touring Norrie is also an experienced tutor of songwriting and visual art to youth and community groups. He composed the soundtrack to the award winning ‘Look Out’ theatre production “Hanging Tree” at Edinburgh Fringe Festival with Americana UK calling him “an astonishingly good songwriter”. His visual artwork has been commissioned for use within the Ken Loach feature film - 'Aye Fond Kiss' and the David Mackenzie film - 'Hallam Foe’.

Starting in March 2017 Norrie will tour the new album “Bare Along The Branches”, his third full length release in as many years which is released Feb 24th on Black Dust Records. 

​A busy schedule during 2016 included shows at the acclaimed Belladrum, Glasgow Americana, SummerTyne and Southern Fried roots music festivals. Whether he is performing shows solo or alongside his various collaborators Norrie has received excellent reviews for both his live performances and recorded output.
