The mix is something of a highlight reel from this summer, stand-out tracks from sets I’ve played and records I’ve bought recently. I used one or two in the mix, which is a first for me and hopefully I can incorporate more in future sets. It changes style dramatically every couple of tracks, jumping from 80s call-centre jingles to fresh ‘I Can’t Believe It’s Not Dubstep!’ from Via Maris’ latest two-tracker, and lots of sounds in between. The challenge is making this heavy-handed approach work, both in terms of transitioning  between tracks and creating a general narrative for the mix. As usual, I allowed plenty of space for bongos.

Digging up rare vinyl grooves in the city of gold, DJ Okapi brings a forgotten era of South African pop music back to life...

Specifically the synth-fuelled 80s disco-funk known as bubblegum and the unique house-inspired kwaito grooves of the early 90s, connecting them to their contemporaries in other parts of Africa and its diaspora.

@midland: “With this mix I wanted to try and capture the sound of me in the club during a long set in the part of the night when you and the crowd are locked in to a groove; a time when you’re able to make left turns, but it feels totally natural. As ever unreleased records sit alongside new records alongside records that came out 10/20/30 years ago. I definitely wanted to build to a more electro/rave crescendo in the middle of this, and try and plot a course through some broken stuff towards the end. I really enjoyed recording this one!”
