Vṛṣṭi (वृष्टि, pronounced vru-shtee) is a Sanskrit word for rain, a cleansing and sacred force in Indian culture. From its first notes, the piece evokes the gentle stillness of a sky about to open — guitar harmonies shimmer like the first drops, and the bansuri enters with a breath of anticipation. As tabla rhythms emerge, the soundscape gathers momentum, mirroring the way clouds build and release their energy. The soprano saxophone soars into dialogue with the bansuri, weaving through the bass’s steady undercurrent, until the ensemble converges in a downpour that cleanses, uplifts, and transforms.

GRAMMY®-nominated artist Noshir Mody has brought together an extraordinary ensemble to breathe life into Vṛṣṭi. Matt Geraghty (2× Latin GRAMMY® nominee, bass) is a boundary-pushing producer and composer whose work documents and uplifts diverse musical traditions. Alongside him is tabla virtuoso Dibyarka Chatterjee, son of the esteemed global tabla master and founder of Chhandayan, Pandit Samir Chatterjee of the Farrukhabad gharana, carrying forward one of India’s most respected tabla lineages.

Completing the ensemble are two equally distinctive voices. Rasika Shekar, an internationally acclaimed flautist, vocalist, and composer, has performed with icons such as John McLaughlin, AR Rahman, and Shankar Mahadevan, and was featured on the GRAMMY®-winning album Divine Tides. Arun Luthra, one of New York’s premier saxophonists, is the creator of the groundbreaking Konnakol Jazz Project, blending post-bop jazz with the rhythmic language of Indian classical music and performing his work on stages worldwide.

In essence, Vṛṣṭi goes beyond its literal meaning, encapsulating the interconnectedness of nature, the divine, and human experience. The music flows as rain does — stillness giving way to movement, dialogue to release — leaving the listener with a sense of reflection, renewal, and awakening.

Belonging to You

I finally got back to writing lyrics to my music after almost two decades of focussing exclusively on instrumental music. Steering away from the frivolous or exaggerated, my intent was to capture the truth as I know it today. The premise was: if I had the opportunity to speak to myself as a young teenager, to offer solace and comfort through this incredible journey of life which was about to take place – what would I say? Having already sketched out the harmony for this song, in about five minutes these lyrics flowed through me –  

Featuring piano and guitar solos and the wonderful Kate Victor on vocals, I hope this song strikes a chord with you as we all look to build a better, more inclusive and tolerant future for ourselves, our families, our communities, our countries and the world!

03 Illusions Grow

Noshir Mody is a stimulating and creative fusion guitarist displaying a beautiful tone, versatility, and inventive ideas on his picturesque originals. Throughout his career, he has recorded consistently rewarding and thought-provoking sets of original music. Mody recently released his latest set of picturesque and atmospheric jazz, A Burgeoning Consciousness where six of Mody’s originals are performed by a superior sextet comprised of the leader’s guitar, alto and tenor-saxophonist Mike Mullan, trumpeter Benjamin Hankle, pianist Campbell Charshee, bassist John Lenis and drummer Yutaka Uchida.

Throughout A Burgeoning Consciousness, Noshir Mody displays his own highly individual sound on the guitar along with a fresh imagination that reflects his wide musical experiences. Born and raised in Bombay, India, he was self-taught on guitar. Mody has stated that his early inspirations included Indian classical music, Al DiMeola's Elegant Gypsy, music from Bollywood, and rock along with the modern jazz guitar masters.

After moving to New York in 1995, Noshir Mody dedicated himself to creative music, regularly leading his own trio in clubs. His original conception to playing music was well showcased in his groups The EthniFusion Rock Ensemble and The EthniFusion Jazz Ensemble. Mody’s impressionistic playing and colorful originals were documented in his solo guitar recording In This World With You, his trio set Union Of Hearts and by his quintet on Stories From The Years Of Living Passionately.

Now, with the release of A Burgeoning Consciousness, Noshir Mody has taken another giant step forward with arguably his finest recording to date.
