For a long time I was intrigued by Nobel Prize-winning Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral, I went to visit her birthplace and wrote a one-woman play about her life, creating songs from her poems, which I performed in many venues including Teatro Jalisco in Guadalajara, Mexico, and The Armory for the Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Later my mother informed me that Gabriela Mistral was a good friend of my Chilean grandfather and actually took me in her arms as a baby saying "this one is mine" !  I wrote the music for my song "Me Miro" using lyrics from her poem "Extasis".

En la canción escribes: “Cuando te busco/ no hay sitio/ adonde no estés”. Y uno está tentado a decir que es una canción de amor. ¿Pero por qué se llama “Cactus”?

Porque se deriva de una experiencia que tuve en el desierto mexicano, aunque no es una descripción de eso tampoco. Pasó mucho tiempo, pero recuerdo una experiencia con los indígenas de ese lugar, los chamanes, que me decían que al principio no iba a ver ninguno de estos cactus que estaba buscando. Me decían: vas a caminar y no vas a encontrar nada, y vas a andar por el desierto y no vas a ver nada, y de pronto va a aparecer uno, ese, déjalo. Yo sigo las instrucciones de gente que sabe. Uno se encomienda a esos viajes con gente que sabe, si no, más vale no hacerlo. Entonces uno me dijo: cuando veas uno, vas a ver todos. Y es exactamente lo que me ocurrió. Y de ahí se derivó la frase, no la canción en sí, la canción es como cierta contemplación del tiempo, que como humanos somos a veces un poco impasibles. Un médano se transforma en un témpano, pero en millones y millones de años, ¿no?, y el universo se maneja a esas escalas. Nosotros miramos el cielo y vemos cosas que ya ocurrieron hace millones y millones de años. Un pasado, un tiempo que nos es absurdo, pero al mismo tiempo es real.

Nosotros seamlessly combines Latin rhythms with the elements of Flamenco, Jazz, Salsa, and Rock, creating an original sound that is unmistakably Nosotros. But M.E. Schenck of Hyperactive Music Magazine may have interpreted their sound best by saying “Nosotros’ music is not to be explained, it is to be felt in the pit of our souls.”

The award-winning ensemble began as a guitar trio in 1994 and was based in the southern New Mexico town of Las Cruces. The band gained an almost immediate following while playing every venue the town had to offer. Nosotros successfully self-produced two albums, “Palomo” and “Pico,” both of which received excellent reviews and sold very well. In early 2001, Nosotros combined its line up with the local jazz trio Quantum.

By September 2001, Nosotros was selling out shows and relocated to the Albuquerque/Santa Fe area, firmly establishing themselves as one of the most popular bands in New Mexico. In February 2002, Nosotros caught the ear of percussionist/producer Chris Trujillo. Trujillo is best known for his work with Tom Petty, The Black Crowes, Rod Stewart, Toto and Diana Ross. In November of 2003, Nosotros released their third album, self-titled “Nosotros,” produced by Trujillo. This self-titled album received numerous awards, cementing the group’s reputation as a Latin music powerhouse.

Nosotros' recently released their fourth album entitled "Llena La Alma" with Grammy Award Winning Engineer, Doug Geist.
