Certified Groovers [9 hour open to close set]

Hey friends!

I had a blast last weekend playing open to close for Certified Groovers in DTLA. A 9-hour solo show is a huge undertaking and my nerves *almost* got the better of me when I showed up to the venue early and found out I incorrectly formatted my flash drives. Somehow I sensed something would go wrong, so I rushed home, reformatted the drives, and grabbed a big bag of vinyl in case of more gremlins. Shouts to the legends Zac and Collin from Loud Laboratory for helping sort out a spare drive as a final failsafe—as well as their lighting, production, and absolutely smackin' sound on a Traction sound system. Extra special shoutout to all the dancers that stayed until after sunrise, thanks for the memories.

Let's be honest, the amount of DJs has exploded since the pandemic and with the endless proliferation of social media almost anyone can grow a following if they produce enough content that's clear and consistent.

I'm not gonna hate on anyone, brag about how long I've been mixing or how I started on vinyl and blah blah blah because at the end of the day it's all irrelevant to 99% of people on the dancefloor.

I've played full rooms and empty rooms, from Coachella to dive bars... and if I have any advice for anyone that wants to hear it, I've learned these things:

• Not everyone has your taste in music, so chill out, you ain't all that
• As a fan you either dig the vibe the DJ is throwing down or you don't
• Take risks. Jam behind the decks.
• Don't make every transition precious. Most people won't notice a sloppy beatmatch here or there.
• Most importantly, HAVE FUN.

RE/FORM Spring 2024 DJ Contest: [nostradahm]

I am pleased to share with you the recording from my 3 hour vinyl only opening set at Certified Groovers’ 2-year anniversary party ‘A Thing’ this past Saturday, June 8th. 🤗

Vinyl can be quite unforgiving as anyone who has tried to mix two records together already knows. Despite a few skips, jumps, sloppy beat matches, and minor mishaps in this set, the most important thing is to keep everyone dancing and make sure that they have a good time. 

At least, that’s what all those sync button DJ say, right? 😉

Well, don’t take my word for it, just ask anyone who was there what they thought of the set or have a listen and judge for yourself. Either way, I had a blast. 

Even with the recent commercial vinyl revival, I think hunting for timeless tracks and spinning records is a bit of a lost art, you know? I’m just one of many DJs in the scene trying to keep it real, but couldn’t be happier to share the stage with underground legends who share a similar sentiment. 

Thank you to all my friends, groovers on the dancefloor, Certified Groovers, @djkerry, @sneakthedj, plus @ianjosemusic and  Sky Rivers (@boris-collage) sending us home on some subby minimal grooves on a Sunday morning.

Certified Groovers—'A Thing' [3 Hour *Vinyl Only* Opening Set]

It was an honor to be on opening duties again for Certified Groovers' marathon 50 hour closing party for 2024 in DTLA. This is a 3 hour-vinyl only set featuring records pulled from deep in my crates: everything from deep / minimal house, to some disco house, forgotten 90's gems, UK garage, some cheeky DJ edits, and plenty of track ID's.

Certified Groovers—Closing Party 2024 [3 Hour *Vinyl Only* Opening Set]

I made my big debut with Framework on New Year’s Eve for their sold out show at RED Studios in Hollywood! I played a 4 hour set in the vinyl room while Rampa from Keinemusik headlined the main room, with Anastazja on opening duties. This show as a massive opportunity for me and also gave me a chance to play out some of the more well-known records pulled from my crates, with a particular focus on tracks by artists that have recently played for Framework. The response from the crowd was surprisingly great, and more than once I got asked “…is that *real* vinyl??!”  

Thanks to the homie Omer (@minusthelight) for hooking it up with the booking, to all my friends on the Framework crew for all the amazing work they do, and extra special shoutout to my wife for making me look so good in pictures.

Session011 — Crate Digs Radio 003

nostradahm is Alex Dahm, an aspiring architect, designer, musician, and DJ based in Los Angeles.

As a DJ, Alex has played everything from major festivals to underground events including: Coachella, Splash House, Pattern Bar, Ace Hotel DTLA, Melody, Certified Groovers, and a plethora more parties throughout Southern California. In addition to his numerous live performances, Alex hosted over 30 weekly 2-hour radio shows for the UK-based DJ collective Crate Digs (@crate-digs) from 2021-2022.

Drawing from his full-time occupation as designer, Alex's love of shapes, patterns, complex geometry, and spatial perception are all concepts at the foundation of his music. Like pages from an audio sketchbook, he regularly records and posts live jams to his Instagram and Facebook pages that are eventually mixed, mastered, and released as tracks.

What sets Alex apart is his ability to seamlessly weave together a wide range of influences into his productions and DJ sets. His musical palette encompasses genres like house, techno/dub techno, UK garage, drum and bass, disco, new wave, industrial, post-punk, ambient, classical, jazz, hip-hop, and more.
