Next up we are delighted to have London based music aficionado and friend of the label Johnny Aux for mix #110. For those living under a rock, Johnny is a member of Paranoid London, Sworn Virgins, Decius and the rest... which we won't go into 😎 very little introduction required.

The recording, taken from our Kutika record release party at Kristina Records is a dubbed out space exploration, seamlessly blended throughout with hints of Johnny's signature acid sound creeping in towards the end.

It was a joy to play the warm up set at Optimo's New Year's Day party in The Berkeley Suite earlier this month. The night started at 8pm (until 4am...so a long night) and the room took a while to get busy so I felt it was completely acceptable to veer into the stranger atmospheric territories of my record collection. By half an hour or so in, people had started arriving and dancing so things pick up around halfway through but I still keep the tempo below 110bpm for a slow build. Artists featured include: Beige, Mauoq, Peter Power, C.P.I., Renaldo & The Loaf, Alek Lee, James Holden & Maalem Houssam Guinia, Froid Dub, Olta Karawane, Killing Joke, Mugwump, Girls Chat Room, CatCat, Alterleo, Lust Pattern, Ballistic Mystic, La Bottine Souriante & Legion Of Green Men, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Aiku. GK Machine @ Optimo, The Berkeley Suite, Glasgow (01.01.24)

Matt Cowell is the co founder of longstanding web zine meets label Viscera as well as a resident of London based party Optick.

Having been heavily involved in electronic music for many years he has fronted several parties and become a familiar face in the East end of the city having moved to the big smoke from the coast a few years back.

He brought with him a cheeky smile and a record bag full of exquisite House and Techno which demonstrates a depth and maturity in the dance.

A keen champion of friends and a familiar face front left, his taste is broad and eclectic, lending itself perfectly to deeper, longer sets of which he has become a stalwart of as a resident for Ransom Note.

This mix demonstrates a deep rooted knowledge in respect to selection – weaving its way through a number of key moments and creating a cathartic well rounded soundtrack which few DJ’s are able to achieve.

Not An Animal is a label born from the party debris left uncleaned from London’s infamous Bad Passion parties, as ran by Chris Stoker and Andy Bainbridge.

As Chris and Andy’s energy was being devoted more and more to their musical endeavours (Chris - Ess O Ess with Jamie Blanco / Andy - Machete Savane with Saul Richards & more recently Latrec with Ali Colling) it became both a logical and inevitable step that they would eventually see the birth of their own record label, to showcase not only their own music but also that of the friends that they’ve made in over a decade of throwing and attending parties in various guises.

It’s this collective nature which means that Not An Animal cannot be pinned down to one single sound, genre or style. The music is instead linked by a commonality of taste and approach from all of the artists involved. While you can draw some slight comparisons with the contributors (which include the aforementioned Ess O Ess and Machete Savane, as well as Man Power, Lauer, Roman Flugel, Chida, Suzanne Kraft, The Backwoods, Kuniyuki, Frank Butters, Justin Van Der Volgen, Discodromo, Tiago & Angophora ) it would be impossible to say that anything truly unites them further than an open aesthetic which is receptive to sounds as various as Techno, Disco, Rock, Balearica and good old fashioned House, and which doesn’t try to draw any distinction between any of them.
