"A bit about him:

Sheepshead is a born-and-bred Brooklynite who heard the many ebbs and flows the electronic underground - with his formative years in the scene surrounded by seminal parties such as Dub War, Flashing Lights and The Bunker - you could very well take the hint that the dude likes his bass music. His approach to club sounds has always been adventurous, leading him to establishing his own mix series at Newtown Radio in 2017, entitled Newtype Rhythms. 

Things have picked up since then, as Newtype Rhythms is now a regular presence at local haunt Jupiter Disco as a residential event series whilst holding satellite events at venues such as Elsewhere and Good Room. Additionally, the mix series has a large international listenership which has resulted in DJ sets for Sheepshead in cities such as Berlin and Krakow, as well as guest mixes on platforms such as NTS, Rinse France and The Lot Radio. Since the pandemic has eased in the last few months, business has picked up locally for him with more appearances. 2022 promises to be a bolder year for the event + mix platform as well as the person behind it, but that doesn't happen until after you hear this Sorrymix.

About "Sheepshead's Beef n' Cheez Rollers Mix"

"Sometimes, you just need comfort food. In my case, that's going to Roll 'N Roaster and getting what you see in that image, with a good amount of gravy (if you don't get the gravy, you're doing it wrong). This mix was made with comfort in mind; I put myself in the mindset of my ideal pace of what a DJ set should entail and surrounded it with lots of percussive ingredients; seeding ideas of bass tones that would appear by the end of the set. I also wanted to highlight local voices (Ayesha, Doctor Jeep, Escaflowne, Ma Sha Ru) with some harder, darker-edged stunners (Breakage, Goth-Trad, Homemade Weapons) that get the rollers going off into another dimension by the end. For the label's second release, Pendulum Recordings presents Abyss Elixir, a 5 track EP from Berlin based French sound artist and producer Zoë Mc Pherson.

Abyss Elixir is an EP made to self-heal and with a transformative perspective. Using warm low frequencies, Mc Pherson creates a visceral atmosphere that is personal and contemplative, yet the listener is present. At times it feels so intimate that the listener wonders if they should even be there. Are they allowed to be there? Unlike a lot of Zoë Mc Pherson’s releases, there are no collaborations here.

In the artist’s own words:

“The overall tracks are meant for heavy sound systems that are able to hit your heart, but also to be played loud in your headphones while taking time for yourself. The whole EP is an elixir, made to mend, if you are able to allow that space and process what is happening. Whatever the mood, it is full acceptance, strengthening and developing your position, observing what is around you, its history and what changes, as well as what needs to change further.”

Mc Pherson opens the EP with “I Expect Nothing (Straight), a 12 minute moody composition with powerful vocals that are at times sultry and at other times maniacal. Singing “I Expect Nothing,” Mc Pherson’s vocals can quickly turn from soulful and enchanting to hysterically laughing from one moment to the next. The track has a natural groove as the journey builds and layers upon itself. While the entirety of Abyss Elixir is a narrative, “I Expect Nothing” is a composition within itself.

Over the 5 track EP Mc Pherson leads the listener on an introspective journey using dub rhythms, noise and experimental textures, and creeping sub bass. Playful beats juxtapose between moments of darkness and intensity. The EP concludes with the track “Bound To Spill,” a powerful closer that feels like a final purge. By the end, the listener is left to process their own journey and start anew.

Following the lurid techno histrionics of Peder Mannerfelt’s All In Your Hands, the PM+ series doubles down with unnerving efficiency to present a formidable pair of club levellers from a formidable pair of club levellers. As an artist across many media, Zoë Mc Pherson slips between easy definition, with an uncompromising experimental attitude which sometimes tests soundsystems and sometimes fills gallery spaces. Ciarra Black operates in murky fringes of contemporary techno, comfortable wielding industrial intensity and eerie negative space alike. 

As Carbon 96, Mc Pherson and Black first performed a live hardware collaboration for the COMMON multiverse live stream in 2021. Now their joint venture gets pumped full of gas and rises to the surface, manifesting as two sharply tooled rhythms. The first, ‘Hyper Hunter’, is a finely balanced blend of pummeling percussion and cavernous space, marked out by echoes and purrs that soften the attack of the rapid-fire low-end thunder. ‘Club Soda’ is a fizzy spritzer in comparison, rocking at a peppy tempo with its own cascade of higher-register pockmarks and angular rave stabs squashed into blunt instruments.
