Welcome to the Sound Of Love International 001 complied by Gatto Fritto. Love International is a festival held in Tisno, Croatia now moving into its third season. Held to a soundtrack of the very best of underground dance music and running 24 hours a day - from noon to night and back through again - full circle. This series, masterminded with London’s Balearic culture website, Test Pressing, is curated by some of our favourite artists and DJs. A place for them to choose 12 records close to their heart, and with ties to the festival, that they love and what to share with the world. So to the first compiler - Gatto Fritto a.k.a Ben Williams. 

A lifetime working in the better record shops of London and Berlin and DJing in Europe’s finest underground clubs, Ben is getting the props he deserves. Put into context, although not in a box, on line-ups curated by Call Super, Ben UFO and Palms Trax the word is spreading. It’s partially testament to the increased open mindedness of younger big room crowds but far more to Gatto’s ability as a DJ and a knack for finding an undiscovered mix of music that fits. 

Having previously made freaky Disco mutations for Dissident Records, then an album of Kosmiche inspired sounds for International Feel, it’s proving to be something of an advantage not being easily hamstrung by genre. 

So what about the music here? It’s a collection of tracks that Ben played across his last two sets at Love International’s open air club Barbarellas. There’s a dubby wildness in the stereo field that sounded good on the soundsystem. The clever part is how well suited these sounds are to the balmy outdoor vibe and where and when this music comes from. You can’t copyright these emotions, it would seem and no-one told them in Cologne, Sheffield, Jamaica that the music they were producing would soundtrack a blinky-eyed sunrise in Croatia. 

So we get Mad Professor’s son, Joe Ariwa’s, demented Gabber tempo stepper played on 33. Which is about as House as Reggae is ever going to be. A crash course in Skwee’s year long diversion into afrobeat turned out the cream of the crop in Anaalivaihe’s 10.11.2012 or Mi Ami’s outlier release on Pure Silk that sounds like, in Ben’s words, “Francois K being forced to make a record with a Juno 60”. Or crazy vari-speed tape dubbing from Sonny Okosun in the dub version of ‘Highlife’ – the kind of record that Ben loves, where the end result is a happy accident. The original intention of the maker some distance from the reasons for our enjoyment. 

Musically adventurous, disparate yet harmonious and dance floor friendly. Clever trick, clever bloke. Ladies and gentlemen this is the sound of Love International.

Imagine standing on an empty room. Nothing seems to be moving.
There is not a single noise there. Just a wooden door. You it and
you find a space full of color, movement. You can see a few bodies
swaying. You can hear clearly a melody. A beautiful vocal. Several
palm trees arise. You find yourself in the middle of one of the most
beautiful paradises on earth, Martinique Island.

What you are hearing is Raphäel Toiné’s “Ce Ta Ou / Sud Africa
Révolution”, one of the most gorgeous Zouk albums ever made.
Funk arrangements, fat bass &amp; crazy synths all melt together in a
record that transports the dancer to a remote piece of land in
the middle of the Caribbean.

This rare afro-boogie and Zouk synth funky LP was recorded in
Switzerland in 1986 by this incredible artist that knew how to
condense the vibe and lifestyle of a region in a piece of black gold.
"Dread vibrations" or "Sortilège", two of the seven cuts that
compose this work are both ready to delight a listener on the
prettiest sun rise as well as make dancers drool at the end of a
three-day festival.

"Femmes pays douces", played by Antal in many shows, is an impressive exercise where vocals
decorate a melodic instrumentation that could be listened in loop
forever. &quot;Bizness a Bangkok&quot; is a synth and jazzy masterpiece that captures the 80s pure essence and brings peace to the body and mind.

A lost Japanese house classsic! EP of tracks is taken from the rare Kino-Moderno album originally released in 1990 (tracks from this were used for the video game "Video Drug 2"). It's a cool collection of sounds that are reminiscent of Dan Curtin, Soichi Terada or Harumi Hosono's "Super Xevious" proto techno bomb. Features remix work (recorded in 93) from British soulful house DJ Frankie Valentine who had a record on Chez Damier's Balance records. As a bonus this set includes an unreleased version of Into The Future.

Beyond their highly sought after 1978 album Festa Para Um Novo Rei - home to the mystical jazz-funk classic ‘Vidigal’ and released on Philips’ iconic Musica Popular Brasileira Contemporanea series (MPBC) - little is known about Marcos Resende & Index, even to aficionados of rare Brazilian music. Far Out Recordings is immensely proud to present their previously unreleased self-titled debut album from 1976, contributing a crucial missing work from the glory days of progressive Brazilian instrumental music.

A prodigious child, Marcos Resende learned to play the accordion at the age of two, and taught himself the piano at six. In spite of his immense potential to become a musician he travelled to Lisbon in the 60s to study medicine, though he continued to explore his musical passion on the side, forming a trio which ended up opening for Dexter Gordon at the Cascais Jazz Festival in 1971. From here he formed the electronic oriented prog-jazz group Status, who opened shows for the likes of Elton John, Phil Woods, Stan Getz, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, but in spite of their relative live success they have no known recordings.

Now established as a highly regarded keyboardist, composer, and innovative electronic musician, Resende returned home to Brazil following Portugal’s Revolução dos Cravos in 1974.  Inspired and invigorated by US jazz and British progressive rock he’d experienced while residing in Europe, Resende went all out acquiring a keyboard arsenal to be reckoned with, which included the Prophet 5, Yamaha CP-708 and Mini Moog. Determined to integrate his newfound inspirations with Brazilian rhythms and jazz traditions, he formed a new quartet with Rubão Sabino (bass), Claudio Caribé (drums) and the late great Oberdan Magalhães, of Banda Black Rio and Cry Babies fame. Marcos Resende & Index recorded their self-titled debut at Sonoviso Studios with the legendary sound engineer Toninho Barbosa, known as the ‘Brazilian Rudy Van Gelder’ whose impressive resumé includes the era defining classics Light As A Feather by Azymuth, Previsão Do Tempo by Marcos Valle, and Quem É Quem by João Donato. Marcos Resende & Index fits perfectly amongst these masterpieces, sharing both the timeless ethereal qualities as well as the progressive and futuristic ideals of Light As A Feather in particular.

Though he wasn’t short of offers to release the album, Resende felt record companies were de-valuing the time and effort he spent absorbing his influences while establishing a career in Europe, and perfecting his sound with his Brazilian bandmates, as well as the magnitude of the recording they achieved. As time passed, Resende become one of the most revered session keyboardists in Brazil, and played on records by Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque, Edu Lobo, Carlos Dafé and Gal Costa, among many others; as a result his career as a bandleader took a backseat, and this remarkable recording has stayed below the surface til now.

Thankfully Marcos kept the tapes from the Sonoviso sessions safe and presented them to Far Out’s Joe Davis at his home in Lisbon in 2018. Now the time is finally right for the album to see the light of day. Marcos Resende & Index will be available on vinyl, CD and digital formats from 29th January 2021.

Worldwide Award winners First Word Records are pleased to welcome back Souleance; a duo that have been releasing music with us for a decade now, and triumphantly returning to the fold with some brand new music for 2020.

Expanding on the original Normand-Parisian super-duo of Fulgeance and Soulist, the Souleance crew now includes Vincent Choquet on synths and Guillaume Rossel on drums as part of their live outfit. Whilst sonically their style remains unchanged, the formation into a full band sees the Souleance sound become bigger, more realised and more formidable than ever.

The title track 'Les Mouches' sets off the EP in a playful disco manner - a chugging bassline, assorted synthesisers, disco claps and a four-to-the-floor drum track, inspired by the likes of Larry Levan and Candido. Meaning "flies", Les Mouches was a legendary Manhattan club that existed around the era of Studio 54, and was infamously a hangout spot for Imelda Marcos. The club itself was named after a play by Jean-Paul Sartre.
