A studio recording of my usual vocal improv, given shape and depth by Kyle Oppenheimer. This was a wedding gift I did for a friend, HK artist Wong Kit Yi. She had previously introduced me to Kyle for a work of hers, so I thought it'd be nice to have him on board to zhuzh up this wedding gift idea for Ali. I sourced the title, Transition Anxiety from listening to something she'd said in one of our conversations. Recorded on September 12 2021 at Chan Friend Studios, HK.

Transition Anxiety

This track is the result of a project on study of Bako National Park. The purpose of this soundscape is to portray the diversity of bioacoustic and acoustic environment in Bako. Recording for this composition is made using a parabolic reflector, where there is a centralization of the recorded sound source and this is also a form of amplified sound. The approach of making a recording using this method is important as this will give a realistic audio of the recording and be able to give a form of immersive listening to the listener.

Deafrepublic is a single for the upcoming EP Jamadevi by Yangon-based sound designer/electronic music producer Lynn Nandar Htoo.

Lynn Nandar Htoo unmasking the brutality of the political event that happened in 2021 in Myanmar through her sentiments of sound designing & storytelling. The EP explores minimalistic tones overlapping syncopated Myanmar traditional percussions that creates a hypnotic effect - slowly transitioning into dronelike territory synchronized by subtle noises & glitches. Fascinated with traditional tunings and compositions that resembles her Myanmar cultural traditions, Lynn Nandar Htoo integrates the rhythmic essence of Nat Pwel, a ritual that is led by a queer character into haunting ambience depicting the alienation that many has felt since the condemned political event. Jamadevi is an enigmatic piece of electronic music work that yearns to form dialogues of displacement between sound & the effects of politics through her intricate compositions.

Lynn Nandar Htoo is a sound designer, composer & music producer based in Yangon, Myanmar accomplished in both the realm of filmmaking & electronic music. She explores Southeast Asian tuning systems and scales through modern music technologies and was chosen to be part of South East Asia’s music research development by Nusasonic & »Listening to the World – 100 Years of Radio«, an initiative of Goethe Institute.

Badminton is a very popular sports in Malaysia and has been the national game. The game itself require a variety of pace and movement around the court, and above all, it requires fast responsive and reactions against the shuttlecocks. The piece is about my exploration of gesture and motion in the context of playing badminton, with interplay between real and non-real sounds. The sounds were recorded using Soundman OKMII binaural stereo microphone head set. The microphone gave outstanding spatial characteristics which have contributed the source material for the piece.

The piece received Pre Selection of Jury for Electroacoustic Sonic Art Works category in Bourges 2003.
