Jackson Ryland has long been one of D.C.’s most thrilling exports, a hugely talented DJ and producer renowned for his ceaselessly dynamic, high octane sets and relentless streams of top shelf releases under a variety of aliases (Superabundance, with Max D, Rush Plus, with Jus Nowhere, and his own JR2k moniker) spanning breakneck experimental jungle, angsty, fleet-footed techno, warped ambient odysseys and plenty more besides. Though he's a killer DJ, both digitally and with vinyl, he chose to perform live with hardware for his CENTER BOOTH set.

For the 13 years he’s been active, he’s been regularly tapped in his home town to support some of the biggest names in electronic music across a range of different genres, testament to his versatility and deep affinity with a broad spectrum of sounds. Outside of the US capital, he’s been a guest at Bossa Nova Civic Club, and later at Nowadays, where he played his first live set as JR2k last December. He stopped by the CENTER BOOTH stage during his most recent New York visit, just ahead of an appearance at Public Records alongside Lychee and gbd.

His CENTER BOOTH set kicks off in third gear and never slows down, showcasing his unique ability to infuse sweaty, beat-driven tracks with an ethereal lightness. His drums are often fast and scattered while pads are drawn out and dreamy, with ear-pricking flourishes including cheeky whistles, cartoonish FX and arpeggiating bleeps. Early on, a hardgroove track sounds like the contemporized bastard child of Jeff Mills’ “The Bells” and Operation Blade’s “Bass In the Place” (a compliment!) while a trancey, gauzy interlude leavens the set around the 24 minute mark. A late stage techno track nods to Drexicya with its waterlogged synths and snapping drums, but Ryland’s authorial stamp is all over this blitzing set from one of North America’s finest.
