A Story of the Sea

Beyond Visuals is my Bachelor Thesis and Project, which consists of both research and practical implementation.
The project aims to interpret and translate the understanding
of God in Islam through an audible experience,
which references many aspects in Islamic Art, disciplines
of Qur’anic recitation, Sufi Dhikr and the 99
Attributes of Allah.
The main focus however, of the creation of this sound piece were the 99 Names of Allah, as they have shown to be the strongest non-figurative representation of God that Muslims have.
Although, no concrete mental image comes to mind when hearing, reading or remembering such Names, they are still able to help Muslims better understand God as a 'Being'.
The piece takes the audience through three stages: The beginning acts as an introduction of different audible Islamic worship rituals, with the gradual integration of my personal interpretation of the "aggressive" Names (Al-Asmaa' Al Jalaleya). Slowly moving onto more neutral Names, until reaching the "kinder" Names of God (Al-Asmaa' Al Jamaleya) and finally entering into Al-Noor (The Light).

Beyond Visuals: An audible exploration of Divine Representations in Islam

This project was made in collaboration with SomeMud, as part of a bigger project for the GUC Music Ensemble, who were rearranging and performing the Egyptian classic operetta "El Leila El Kebira" (The Big Night). 
This sound piece was created as an introduction to the actual performance of the Ensemble. It was intended to be played, while the audience was still taking to their seats and preparing for the main show. 
Recollection & Voices of the Past is a collage and sampling of the most prominent sounds of the 1960's, in specific focus on former president Gamal Abdel Nasser's archived speeches. A satirical and somewhat sarcastic approach was intended with the sampling of 'out of context' songs and electronic instruments.
For most of the audience in Egyptian society, this piece acted as a form of nostalgia, taking them back to that era.
