Boy Tzortz - Your Smell Is Familiar [RM5]

Writing about techno is quite difficult without falling into clich&eacute;: there are only so many ways that you can say something about a music whose core elements are forged on deliberate repetition; where real talent is attributed to those who can find the perfect groove where nothing needs added or subtracted to hold the listener's attention for upwards of five minutes. 

Such tracks are the hallmark of Tresor's catalogue, and this joy in repetition can be found in works from Detroit, Berlin, Birmingham, Edinburgh, and more. And it is through this lens that Parisian artist, UFO95, focuses his output, resulting in Backward Improvement, an EP that sits perfectly in the spectrum of techno found in the Tresor chronology. 

The title itself makes an abstract reference to the influence of the classics of the genre, inspiring him to take a distinct less-is-more approach to production for this collection of stripped-down yet unrelenting techno chiselled from the live set which has fixed UFO95 as one of the next holdfasts for the future of the scene. 

Perhaps it is the fact the UFO95 only performs live that had led to such crisp and focussed studio productions.; each of the tracks showcase the artist's burgeoning talent for creating the essential foundations of techno; perfect, looping, instinctual grooves that are counterbalanced by an apprehensive tension from off-key tones. 

Backward Improvement marks the addition of a new name in the list of techno's best producers and proves that while the genre may now be in its 40th year there are yet sonic explorations to be made and variations that are worth unearthing.

OMEN Recordings is delighted to welcome back Berlin-based Colombian artist BRAYAN VALENZUELA for his second EP release with the label. This latest offering features an intense collection of originals, complemented by cutting-edge remixes from Edinburgh's DUELLIST and Los Angeles-based EAS. Each track showcases the unique flair of the remixers, further enriching Valenzuela's visionary sound.

New Hole - "New Hole" is an offbeat hypnotic track that lures listeners into a mesmerizing trance. Crafted with intricate rhythms and an undercurrent of ethereal synths and samples, this piece sets a complex, rhythmic foundation that invites deep introspection amidst its pulsating beats.

You Are Gold - A standout track, "You Are Gold" drives the EP forward with its peak-time, driving beats and twitchy textures. This track is an anthem for the night, pushing the limits of electronic music with its rapid-fire rhythms and immersive, high-energy soundscapes.

Put Pizza in Your Mouth - This hard-stomping track combines relentless energy with haunting stabs, creating a brooding atmosphere that's both invigorating and intense. "Put Pizza in Your Mouth" is a daring sonic exploration that captures the essence of peak dancefloor moments, marked by its bold textures and dynamic pace.

New Hole (EAS Remix) - EAS strips back "New Hole" to its core with a no-nonsense approach that focuses on the essential elements of techno. His remix is a masterclass in minimalism, using sparse compositions to highlight the powerful simplicity of techno, delivering a relentless auditory experience that commands attention.

You Are Gold (DUELLIST Remix) - DUELLIST transforms "You Are Gold" with his signature hard-charging, industrial tones, elevating the track's inherent energy to new heights. This remix retains the original's dynamic spirit while infusing it with a raw, metallic edge that is quintessentially Duellist.

BRAYAN's roots in Colombia and Spain, combined with his immersion in Berlin's techno culture, provide a rich background that informs his distinctive sound—a blend of Latin American influences with European precision and minimalism. Meanwhile, Duellist, known for his rugged, industrial soundscapes, and EAS, who brings a polished, minimalistic approach, add layers of depth and contrast, making this EP a pivotal release for OMEN Recordings. Together, they encapsulate the global spirit of techno while pushing the boundaries of its expression.
