Pegasvs, the moniker by which London-based DJ, Thomas Lesnier, currently operates under, returns with his first track of 2021, “Oscillations (Live Mix)”. This track marks his first since his 2020 Tropical House cut, “Closer to the Sun”, which saw the producer straying from rugged Tech-House for a much sunnier and laid-back sound. 

With “Oscillations”, Lesnier doubles down on this new sonic direction, delivering an epic slow-jam jazz cut with live saxophone and guitar (courtesy of Matt Grenz and James King, respectively). The track feels like a warm, gentle summer breeze, wafting up and immediately putting you in a serene headspace. The track opens with bubbly synths and clinking percussion sticks, which are soon met with a more typical hi-hat pattern and bass-line that subtly builds in tension, culminating in Grenz’s stunning sax solo. The track seems to add on new elements as if it were cruising down a beach-road during sunset and picking up an assortment of hitchhiking friends. There’s an almost symbiotic, utopian feeling that emerges as the track goes on–– nothing feels forced, nor out of place; everything just gels. 

Considering the year we have all had, this track arrives as a balm for our weary spirits. It offers a taste of what we need after a year of crisis and rampant anxiety. The track embodies a kind of back-and-forth, an “oscillation”, if you will, over how music can respond and provide solace to us in times of great distress.

We're going a little off piste with something new on SB this week... We welcome returning mad scientist Scruscru with his buddy Mike Fot who came to us with the beginnings of a weird and wonderful new off shoot series called Spliff Jamz. 

Following a series of visits to Moscow between 2018 and 2020 to play at Powerhouse club, Scruscru would swing by Mike Fot’s apartment for a smoke and a jam session, working with a variety of Roland and Korg gear late into the night. The results of these sessions have led to a series of EPs; with the first four tracks ready for your ears right now.

Here we are in the year 2020: a pivotal moment in global history that

stands to test everything that we, the free-wheeling people of Spaceship Earth, strive to fight for and embody: Peace, Love, Unity and Respect. We can’t say for certain where or when we will find ourselves in the future, whether sequestered to our interior dwellings or frolicking out underneath the fresh sunshine together, however one thing is for certain: we’re gonna need some good music.

After the better part of five years in providing an audiovisual platform for the Internet Underground Masses and now rolling 40,000 subscribers deep on their legendary Youtube channel, it is fitting that Moskalus now enters the label sector.

Moskalus Records will aim to continue to spread that which it always has aimed for: positively motivated musical expressions of love and unity cultivated from the endless corners of the Worldwide Underground Dance circuit. This is an outlet without borders or restrictions. Its a cozy bedroom to lounge in or an inviting club full of good souls to dance within. It’s the weekend you’ve been waiting for crystallized into warm loop of compassion and joy. Its gotta be Moskalus Records!Christening the label, then, is Toyen, Oslo resident Henrik Villard, a young producer who has seen releases on Nite Records, Tooman Records and most recently Two Five Six Records from Amsterdam. Villard’s signature style fits perfectly within the mission of Moskalus Records: warm, inviting house without pretense, as groovy and lush as you’d hope. I Wanna Stay EP lays apparent these traits across its four tracks with a fisheye lens of Rhodes-like pads, distant coos, and sexy slap bass, an underwater discotheque caught at its most comforting peak.

We reached out to Henrik to ask what he may like to say to the people: I guess I’d like to say thanks to everyone who listen to my music, that means a lot. Next up on Heist is the fast-fingered synth wizard Crackazat for an EP full of crunchy chords, tight grooves and a remix by Detroit house royalty Rick Wade.

Crackazat’s fusion of jazz and house are a perfect match with the upbeat sound we dig over here at Heist HQ. So after his recent outing on Freerange with the brilliant “Valentine EP” and his regular work on Local Talk, we’re happy to have Crackazat feature on Heist.

The Alfa EP kicks off with the title track: A track full of bouncing piano riffs and skipping hihats for a serious dose of high energy house music. The frantic keys and drums are countered by a lead and dreamy pads with an almost ethereal vibe to it. But don’t be misled, this track is pure dancefloor heat and is exactly what we love about house music.

“Class one” goes into a more mellow direction, with warm fuzzy chords on the 1 and an eyes-shut lead solo with so much space it seems to be coming from a different galaxy. The whole track has such a comforting feeling; Like a thick blanket of chords warming you up and crystalline synth hits telling you everything will be all right. The energy does pick up around the 3 minute mark with another showcase of Crackazat’s excellent feel for chords, when he introduces another lovely loop to accompany the solo. Pure class.

On the flip, we’ve got Tiger’s eyes where we see Crackazat dive deep into jazzy harmonies. Here, arpeggios and crunchy overtones make for an intense ride of bumping house music that just makes you want to keep on dancing for hours on end.

The remix on this EP is by Rick Wade, another producer who’s got jazz running through his veins. It’ll be no surprise that his remix of “Alfa” is about as deep and old school as it gets. He goes for an amped bass and a big drum groove along with his own set of soulful chords and guitar licks. This remixes breathes the house that Detroit has been built on with Rick Wade as one of the main engineers of the genre.

We’re happy to dive into 2021 with this EP full of jazzy house grooves and we hope you’ll like it as much as we do.

Premiere: Crackazat - Tiger's Eyes [Heist Recordings]

'Cinthie’s Collective Cuts sub-label of her 803 Crystal Grooves imprint returns in February with a fresh four-tracker from Belgium’s UC Beatz.
Hailing from Brussels, Belgium, UC Beatz has been steadily making his mark on the contemporary house scene via releases on the likes of Razor N Tape, Roundabout Sounds, his own Entrepôt Records and Cinthie’s Collective Cuts where he returns here for a full length EP, following his contribution to the various artist package which preceded this one.

‘Bongos, Rhodes & Candles’ leads the EP, the title perfectly setting the tone as organic drums, hazy chords and a jazz leaning house aesthetic propels you into UC Beatz world. ‘Wild Horse’ follows next, stripping things back to shuffled drums, sharp stab sequences, choppy vocals and a gritty bass line.

Opening the flip is ‘Sunshine On My Mind’, shifting focus to deeper sounds with fluttering pads, bright resonant synth licks and bubbling arpeggios while a dynamic drum workout keeps things moving. ‘Vertigo’ then rounds things out with crunchy percussion, jazzy piano lines and squelchy acid licks.'
