Last summer I experienced a night of intense and persistent sleep paralysis, with this hallucinating sensation that a very evil force was roaming around me. It embodied in the form of a violent wind rushing in my room to carry me off. As soon as I was going back to sleep, the same scene was starting again and I couldn't fight against it.

I tried to reproduce the sensations I had during this peculiar night through this sound collage piece, which is full of dark ambient, drone and gloomy experimental sounds.

What's it going to take to save the planet? After another year of extreme temperatures and limp promises, climate activists are at a strategic crossroads.

Extinction Rebellion has declared a shift away from disruptive tactics. Splinter groups like Just Stop Oil remain committed to direct action, even at huge personal cost. And in Germany, the Ende Gelände movement is taking the fight to the heart of fossil fuel infrastructure, blockading coal mines and facing off against the police. Is anything working?

As XR prepares for 'The Big One' on 21 April, Clare Hymer puts the question to three activists at the forefront of the movement: Clare Farrell, a co-founder of Extinction Rebellion, Rachel Bosler, an activist with XR offshoot Just Stop Oil, and Alice Swift from Ende Gelände.

Despite the gains won by a century of feminism, the conveyor belt of normie life still pushes us towards the nuclear family and the picket fence. We can sense that our freedom is still limited by our material conditions – the prohibitive cost of housing, for instance – but is it also limited by our lack of imagination?

In her debut book, Novara Media contributor Sophie K. Rosa explores that question and makes the case for 'radical intimacy': the idea that expanding our notion of intimate, caring relationships will not only engender happiness, but a kind of revolution. 

She joins Rivkah Brown for a conversation about deconstructing the patriarchal family, the promise of queer parenting, and why it's so hard to actually build the commune of our dreams.

Novara FM: Much More Freedom Is Necessary W/ Sophie K. Rosa

"Soulcaster" is the third solo record by Brooklyn-based composer/performer Joanna Mattrey. Following Live in Accord and various Notice Recordings-curated performances in the Hudson Valley, this album is a further development in our years-long friendship. With "Soulcaster", Mattrey scrapes, scratches, and wails on viola, prepared viola, and a tromba marina, built by Webb Crawford. Mattrey’s love of unique and unusual sounds has inspired her to alter the pure tone of the viola through preparations with styrofoam, plastic toys, chains, and other objects. But the newest sounds in her arsenal come from the tromba marina, which has one primary playing string and thirteen sympathetic strings. Rather than gently coaxing out the harmonics, as the historical playing style suggests, Mattrey employs a raucous and roaring approach.

The title, "Soulcaster", is borrowed from Brandon Sanderson’s book series, "The Stormlight Archive". In the fantasy series, a soulcaster is an instrument that transforms one object or life form into another. Mattrey’s practice connects heavily to the idea of transformation. She uses preparations and objects not only to create new sounds from her instruments, but to embrace the unknown. No matter how many times the same object has been used, depending on the vibrations on a given day, the preparations might bring out totally different sounds. This randomness creates a joyful challenge for Mattrey, who believes that especially during improvisation, music has its own life that activates and guides the sound forward. Mattrey surrenders to this energetic line of sound over the eleven tracks featured on this tape.

"I wanted to make something which reflected a scene of nature, outside of the city, somewhere which has become more and more attractive to be over the last few months... So I made these synthesised percussion sounds to be almost real and wooden, which are weaving in and out across different tempos, playing patterns that are somewhat regular, but always changing slightly. This is meant to be analogous with the dawn chorus, or any scene of nature where lots of different small events are happening, layered, at once... But I only had the dawn chorus, so I recorded that at 4am on Monday morning. These individual bird songs weaving in and out, repeating, different birds joining and leaving throughout. So it's meant to be 3 different sound environments, or imaginary frames of an environment at 3 different moments."
