Thanks for introducing me to John Dollimore, I really warmed to him and his ideas.

Jonathan Dollimore is one of Britain's greatest cultural critics. In his early work, he recovered the subversive and revolutionary potential of early modern drama, and went on to co-found the Centre for the Study of Sexual Dissidence at Sussex; his book Sexual Dissidence recovers the lost histories of perversion from Augustine to Wilde. His work, whether on death and loss, or sex and censorship, consistently provides new directions in thought and punctures over-easy pieties. In Desire, he brings his intelligence to bear on his own life – and has produced a rigorous, wise and daring account of desire's many and changing forms. 

He joins James Butler to discuss sex and sexuality, the power of literature, domesticated transgression – and learning to think beyond the academy.

Arun Kudnani joins PTO to talk about his article, The Racial Constitution of Neoliberalism which appeared in the Race & Class journal. We talked about how neoliberalism has generated novel forms of racism that cannot be understood simply as residual phenomena from the pre-neoliberal era, why it was that the key neoliberal thinkers were as fixated on defeating leftist movements in the global south during the Cold War as they were on defeating the European and American Labour movements, and finally we talked about whether it is possible to imagine a form of capitalism that is able to dispense with racialisation.

Several years ago, Jon Moses realised that the stunning nature he could see from his house in rural Herefordshire was inaccessible to him. From the nearby riverbanks to the local oak woodlands, the countryside revealed itself to be a private fortress.

Now, as an organiser of the Right To Roam campaign, he's leading the call for free and fair access to land and water throughout England, via political advocacy and planned trespasses on private estates.

Jon tells Eleanor Penny about the traumatic history that separated commoners from the land, the dangers of a rural monoculture, and why the left needs to get comfortable with ideas about place and belonging.
