Vista Points (2009) - All materials used in Vista Points are derived from electric guitar sounds. Often the electric guitar sounds are left raw and layered with processed materials. When these sounds interact there are points of causality, conflict and turbulence. This work also explores the varying distances between soinc events and contrasts between pressured and coluntary behavours to achieve moments of activity and emptiness.

Vista Points (excerpt) for fixed media by Manuella Blackburn

This electroacoustic composition by S. Summers is made entirely from recordings of the Acousatron, which is the new Noisy Toys interactive installation of 2017. The Acousatron is mainly comprised of acoustic instruments (primarily a piano and 4 violins) with electrical and mechanical controls that allow visitors to control and play the instruments in new ways. The sounds used here follow the process of building the Acoustatron, including it's development through many of the Noisy Toys workshops. The 'auto-strummers' used to strike the strings are the same as those used by thousands of people in schools and at public events who have attended our 'Scavengers' and 'Circuit Boxes' workshops over the last few years. The sounds of the motors and the flails hitting various objects start and finish this piece. Contact and acoustic microphone recordings taken from some of the national events that we took the Acousatron to in 2017 feature throughout; UK Maker Faire, Big Bang Fair, Science and Media museum relaunch.

Electroacoustic Piece No.1

In Alpha Position U I wanted to create a sense of movement without moving any sounds. I tried to limit all spectral changes to avoid unnecessary blending and placed the sounds at exactly the speakers positions. Any travel in space is an illusion created by spectral diffusion between the speakers and the acoustics of the listeners room. The music is a distinctive five channel piece which could have been played by five musicians (and a ghost) standing exactly where the speakers are (+ virtuel center back). This stereo version is a mere reflection of the original but still works to give you an option of being in the Alpha position of my soundworld.
    The music was composed in autumn 2007 in Studio Alpha at Visby International Center for Composers in Sweden with a grant awarded by The Swedish Society of Composers.

The Centre is capitalising the success of Music at the University of Manchester with a new £2.2 million investment in a cutting-edge new studio infrastruture. NOVARS is named to reference and celebrate the seminal work by Francis Dhomont (Novars). In his own words 'a reversed version of Ars Nova' - New Art, New Science.
