Bills note:
This EP and especially this song has been very difficult to put together. Yes, we wanted to release this in November but it just wouldn't happen. I tried but I'm a miserable failure.

Melissa was able to make the melody work. She changed it from what I originally created and I'm glad for that! The result is quite good.
This is all real music and sounds quite similar to what someone could hear at the majority of our gigs these days.
We find ourselves doing quieter acoustic kind of shows, but hey, that's not a bad thing is it?
 (By the way - I really have no patience for people who put "helpful" comments about the sound of the kick drum or the snare or the synth sounds I used. THERE ARE NONE! It is just a piano, a voice and a cajon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caj%C3%B3n That's all.)
Will is my right hand man. Hopefully you can hear the interplay between the piano and the percussion. To me, his percussion playing really adds a cathartic energy as the piece goes on.

Real Life: You fall in love with someone or something that is completely  out of your reach. You are consumed by the despair that will be your's alone.

Mythology: Clytie fell hopelessly in love with the god Helios ( Apollo)yet he would never notice her. As he flew his chariot across the sky towing the sun from East to West she watched in vain from down upon the earth in longing and desire..... a love that would never be returned. Her feet became roots in the soil; her face became the flower that tracks the motion of the sun. 

Today she is seen as the sunflower. ( though many agree that the actual flower that moves with the sun is the English Turnsoil)

The man: David Hannah brings the energy when he plays! Although he usually  performs a much heavier style of music than this, we were looking for that powerful, edgy sound in this song. It is truly an honor to have him helping us on this track!

A note from Bill:
This song represents an evolution in our song creating process. In the past I would write the song and then adapt it to Melissa's voice. I'd adjust the key and arrangement to make the most of what she can do. But, this song was written specifically for her voice. I actually heard her say, " It only happens when you're here." (in a different context, of course) and the song just started writing itself while I imagined her singing it the whole time. I built the piano, strings, arrangement and all right around her voice.

So, if you're a gigging musician you may have experienced this awkward situation where one of the band members says something like,"Hey, my girlfriend can sing." Next thing you know you're suffering through some god awful rendition of a Bonnie Raitt song and looking for a way to escape the stage. Anyway, that being said, the point is I'm not that guy. I'm truly inspired by Melissa's vocal performance! I hope that you will agree that magic is happening at the end of this track where Melissa and David are trading off. Will and I lay down the foundation but they just BRING IT!!!!!

The Song: This track has been a long time coming! This was actually one of the first original songs that we did....we just could never ever get it right...finally with the help of SpeedMike .....now in it's third incarnation here it is!

Bills Note: So this is one of the first original songs we started doing at gigs. We originally just wanted to do a few gigs here and there at restaurants and stuff and we basically did all covers until I came up with this song. Truthfully you wouldn't even recognize the original version....it has come so far! We recorded the early version and I just could not get it right. I mixed it, I re-mixed it, I re-re-mixed, I re-arranged it ... and finally I threw it away in despair..... 
Years later along comes SpeedMike....I hear his guitar sound... his melodic style ...and well inspiration strikes! Here it is.

The Old School truly earned his producer wings with this piece. We were the most demanding people he has ever worked with...... but he still likes us anyway. :)
A long time ago he sent us this track wondering if we could possibly come up with some words for it. Yes: words, a new melody, the vocals and then a whole list of musical production items and effects........ We sincerely hope you like the results!

Icarus - imprisoned within the labyrinth, his father (Daedalus - the genius of invention) creates two sets of wings that they may fly out of captivity. Icarus is warned that the wings, being crafted of mere feathers and wax, will melt if he flies too close to the sun. On his escape Icarus becomes so ecstatic with this new ability to fly that he forgets his father's warning.

The song's lyrics are crafted to represent the journey of the musicians and artists. When we start out grounded and imprisoned in the mundane daily grind of life it is often only our family (much like Daedalus, the father) that support us and believe in us. Sometimes we are fortunate enough to come across a friend who believes in us and gives us the tools to reach out beyond ourselves. We need help to face twists and turns, difficulties and obstacles at every point but when things do go well we can't forget that warning.....

Lyrically the concept of "Exactly Like You" is the opposite of "Strong Love". It starts out with that dark feeling of the past that continually haunts you and your wish that things could have been better. But, by the end the song becomes more uplifting.......almost joyful...... representing an acceptance of the events that shaped your very being.

I love the way this song feels at the end. Will can lay down a club beat like nobody's business and Melissa's vocal delivery is just so unique and cool. This actually was going to be a rough draft as I merely wanted Melissa to record a vocal reference track for me to work with..... true to form she just nailed it right out of the gate.

Okay, I'll admit this one is a little different but if you see what I had to work with in the competition thread then it might make more sense. This one was kind of a hard sell to convince Melissa and Will to go along with it but I really like the results. I hope that you do as well!

Bill's Note: True to form Melissa nailed this vocal performance in two takes! The high "classical" sounding parts were mic'd overhead. That type of vocal performance causes a lot of interference with a close mic'd setup due to the volume, mass of air and sound that is moved.
In this recording I tried to emphasize also Will's cymbal work which to me adds to the magical nature of this piece. 
The first seven notes are given to us by Serj Tankian and his "7 Note Challenge". That motif then returns to represent the passage of time. The chord progression is loosely based upon Irving Berlin's "What'll I Do" which really seems fitting considering the subject matter.
The place is "The Point" - a park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where the Allegheny and the Monongahela meet to form the grand Ohio River ...it is a place that I believe is magical and so I created this story.

Bill's note:  So have you ever wanted to go back to the past knowing what you do now? Back to the future. Well, that's what we did here. I've learned a lot about production over the last few years, Melissa has developed a seriously unique and unapologetic vocal style and ... we've purchased some better equipment as well. This song has been a long time producing. The version that we performed at the wedding was very simplified in a piano and voice setting ... this however .... man, it took a long time! 
This song wasn't easy at first. People give me some words and concepts to use about their love, their interests, their relationship, how they met, etc. and I get to make a song out of it. 
The Spartan Sun now has a life of its own in my opinion. Melissa nailed the vocals and breathed true life into this track! I am so thankful as well for my former student and now friend, Tom, and his amazingly tasteful lead work. 
Jeff ( Tainted Icarus ) is always so helpful with his production advice. Sometimes I just can't hear the song anymore after working on it so much and don't think I could finish some of these tracks without him!

Huge thanks to Jeff! He puts up with a lot. I 'm not always the easiest person to work with ... ha,ha. I'm so happy to have my former student, Thomas, bringing the energy with his fine guitar work. When I am writing this stuff he IS the sound that I hear in my head! 
On thing I like about this track is the personality that each musician  brings to it. I really let each of them put their personal spin into the musical arrangement and I'm very happy with the results. I know the sound/style is a bit dated but I love the cathartic energy that the music exudes.

This is probably the closest I'll ever get to one of those stupid quarantine songs. ( no offense meant if you wrote one btw ... ha,ha) 
Tough times around the world. Hopefully this music brings some sort of peace to those who listen. 

I really like the drums in this. Will puts some nice little subtleties there. 
I also concentrated on the bass line a little more in this.
Also the "bookends" on the both sides of the chorus make for a cool statement ... at least with Melissa singing it. 
She kicks it pretty hard in the bridge too. Every once in a while we have to let her show you what she can do, right?
