Hello! I’m Ivy (she/ her) and I live in Eora (Sydney), Australia :-) + I have a 2 year old cat called Frankie 

Who/what currently inspires you music-wise that has nothing to do with music?

I’d say that my emotions generally inspire me, as well as different times of the day. I tend to get the most ideas when I’m trying to figure out what music to listen to in a particular setting - like whether I’m walking around the neighbourhood at dusk, at the park on a beautiful day, cooking something really yummy and comforting or if I’m in a bad mood and need to let some angst out haha


Favorite sound of the city? Describe how it makes you feel. 

I don’t know if this is specific to the city but I love the bird calls that magpies make - I can hear them outside my house early in the morning and it makes me feel like I’m on holiday in the country somewhere :-)

What is your favorite party/collective where you reside and why?

Such a tough question! If I had to name a few - Nectar, Pure Space and Vibe Positive for always putting endless love and care into their events - from lineup curation to constantly working on how they can make spaces safer, more accessible and representative of Eora/ Sydney’s diverse music community :-) 

What was your best moment on the dance floor?

In 2019 Moopie and Bayu closed a small festival called Echo Flats that was a few hours drive away, they played like 4 - 5 hours of the best, grooviest tech house I’d ever heard until the sun came up - it was a life changing morning :’)

What is your favorite temperature? What kind of music goes well with it? 

Probably something between 25 - 28 degrees celsius with some downtempo RnB :-) 

Any advice to upcoming DJs? 

Practice makes perfect! 
Preparing/ pre-planning your sets - especially when you’re nervous about a gig
Backup your shit (!!!!!!)

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community? 

More 24hr licences for venues - less gronks - more tech house

Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community: Don’t gatekeep, don’t rush, find people you’re excited to share music with. Support your peers (listen and share their mixes, buy their music, go to their gigs)! 
The mix I initially prepared for this series I recorded a couple of times -  it felt like I was trying too hard to make something work and it just wasn’t sitting right… but after a night of djing at my friend Amelia Holt’s crib and then watching our friend liivwutang literally tear the club apart, I recorded this session the next day. I wasn’t recording with the intention of using it for anything so there was 0 pressure, I just plugged in my usb and tried to ride the vibes I was blessed with from the night before and something good happened. So record all your sessions and more importantly stay inspired/energized by the work n skills of other djs bc why did we wanna start doing this in the first place? some dj rocked your shit fr.

Ultrafog 'memai' ⓜⓘⓧ ⓪②⑥

Since the launch of their much-loved party brand in 2002, Giles Smith and James Priestley – Secretsundaze’s founders and residents – have dedicated their work and output to ecstatic club experiences. 

A record label followed suit, as did their booking agency, long-running NTS radio show and a stack more DJ and production projects undertaken by the pair. Plus, of course, plenty more parties. 2022 marks 20 years of Secretsundaze, with the duo currently working on some exciting anniversary celebrations – but we’ll leave them to reveal those in due course. 

Here, the pair usher in the new year with their first new mix in 18 months. “The mix is direct and club-focused,” they tell Crack Magazine. “All-vinyl, with our typical Detroit and NYC stylings before moving into some more pushy atmospheric, European bizzness.”

Crack Mix 432: Secretsundaze

An emotional rollercoaster of a mix comes to us this week from Groovy Groovy boss Akanbi, recorded live and direct from the Nowadays booth deep in the summer of 2021, alongside DJ Voices and EQUISS. These were the early days of our reopening and New York's return to nightlife, after a difficult year of closures due to the pandemic. There was a sense of cautious optimism in the air for some, and exuberant joy for others. Akanbi's set on this night met the dancers where they were, merging a tender emotional tenor and uplifting soulfulness with headier rave moments through his unique sense of pacing, all laced in groove and full of surprises. Here's two hours of a DJ fully immersed in their signature style, a set packed to the brim with bubbling percussion and downtempo interludes.

Nowadays Live and Direct 013 - Akanbi

Purelink have been described more than once as an "ambient boy band." (They themselves say "jam band.") It's not meant dismissively—the American trio purposefully mean to function as a band, even if their main instruments are laptops. Ambient might not quite cut it as a descriptor, though. The group's music crosses eras and scenes, touching on the late '90s clicks & cuts boom as well as the billowy ambient techno put out by labels like 3XL, West Mineral Ltd. and NAFF. 

Their most recent LP, Signs, released on enigmatic imprint Peak Oil (and one of our favourite albums of 2023), is especially impressive, made of stuttering rhythms and glassy textures. In other words, it's ambient-not-ambient. While members Concave Reflection, kindtree and Millia have all made excellent music on their own, something special happens when they come together.

Purelink's RA Podcast is another stellar contribution to our post-New Year's tradition, where we highlight a more laid-back sound to soothe weary minds and frazzled brain cells after the heavy holiday celebrations. This is 90-plus minutes of intricately textured downtempo, dub techno and even UK garage, all cut through with a floaty, almost drowsy quality, with plenty of exclusives and unreleased cuts from the likes of Nick León, James K, Downstairs J and more. It highlights Purelink's position as a bridger of worlds, sounds and tempos.

Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community:
Admire famous artists but admire your friends even more. Your peers are the future legends. Be by their side as they work on their projects and don’t take the journey for granted.  It is amazing to be present at the inception of something grand.

About the mix: This mix is sort of an ode to femm vocals in dance music. I wanted to showcase the femm talent in our space that I still see as undervalued. I also chose songs that I felt spoke to the femm perspective as opposed to the male gaze. The mix begins with a lovely cover of Doll Parts and then progresses to a more meditative section, followed by more high energy, sexy tracks. I’d say a lot of the lyrics in this mix describe the body and how we feel in it. Body awareness is a huge part of clubbing and raving for me so I wanted to explore some different interpretations of that awareness.

Excerpt from a set I did at the 2018 Honcho Campout for Geoffrey Larue's Suck It! Afterhours - this all occurred sometime around the early morning of the Sunday of Campout that weekend, as night turned to morning and people existed in the great inbetweens of the end and the beginning. May it bring you some solace as you exist in all manners of personal transition now.

"The softly lulling coos of the dove are testimony to a divinely calming presence among us. In fact, their soft vocalizations and docile appearance enhances their interpretation as celestial messengers – or the symbolic link between earth and air. The dove is a symbol of the soul’s release from its earth-bound duty.

On earth, they are intimately aware of their environment and demonstrate a highly developed sense of presence. As creatures of both the earth and the air, doves serve as liaisons between intuitive thought and common reality. This ability to move between two worlds (sky and earth), bird totems are uniquely posed to funnel higher knowledge down to our human conscious awareness. They link intangible knowing (thought, dreams, intuition) with physical practicality (hearth, home, security). Doves represent the balance between thought (air) and matter (earth).

Bridging this link between the higher mind and the more practical level in which we live makes the dove a perfect guide for dream interpretation as well. Bird totems offer inspiration combined with a grounding element to make new ideas implementable.

The dove represents peace of the deepest kind. It soothes and quiets our worried or troubled thoughts, enabling us to find renewal in the silence of the mind. The dove’s singing is most prevalent when the veils between the physical and spiritual worlds are thought to be at their thinnest – first thing in the morning and last thing at night – again representing a link between two divergent domains.

Doves teach us that, regardless of external circumstances, peace is always a touch a way – within us – and always available. It is said that if a dove flies into your life, you are being asked to go within and release your emotional disharmony. The dove helps us to rid the trauma stored deep within our cellular memory. Doves carry the energy of promise. When inner conflicts are banished from our thoughts, words and feelings, goodness awaits.
