I usually like to play stuff that is more obscure, and i don't regularly use tracks with a lot of English lyrics.

What does “Express yourself” mean to me?

I am a recovering perfectionist.

It sometimes took me 4-7 days to prepare for and record a single DJ set - meticulously choosing tracks, changing and re-changing their order, practicing the transitions between them, then recording and sometimes re-recording the set.

I created some great journeys, but it was exhausting, frustrating and time-consuming.

So, for Damjan’s Xpress Yourself podcast, i decided to try something else - little preparation, tiny bit of practice, and less planning.

I managed to do the whole thing - a 2.5 hour DJ set - in half a day.

This journey and this music expresses who I am and what I love in this point in time.

At Ecstatic Dance events, we dance without shoes, without drugs and alcohol, and most important for me, without words and chit chat.
The music goes from soft to a few peaks and ending soft again, and includes a huge variety of genres and any music that make the body move, the heart feel, and the mind relax.

I'm inspired by growing up in a multi-cultural family, playing classical piano for 7 years, life-long dancing and music-collecting, 20 years of traveling, and an extensive study, practice, and teaching of yoga, tantra and body/energy work.

'Ethnic' is my middle name - I weave devotional, folk, organic and electronic music from cultures and ethnic groups around the world into dance journeys that invoke the mystic, the lover and the animal within us.

Lately i’m super excited about African and Afro-Latin grooves and this journey includes many of my favorites.

Nowananda is inspired musically by growing up in a multi-cultural family, playing classical piano for 7 years, his life-long dancing and music-collecting, 20 years of traveling, and his extensive study, practice, and teaching of yoga, tantra and body/energy work.

He played this journey LIVE at his Ecstatic Dance event in Koh PhaNgan (Thailand). At Ecstatic Dance, they dance without shoes, without drugs or alcohol, without mobile phones, and most important, without talking or chatting - it’s all about the music and dance.
