This Time With You. Solo Piano by Pam Asberry


This album is the musical expression of my personal experience navigating through the coronavirus crisis.

Storm Clouds Gather – This music depicts the sense of foreboding I experienced following the earliest reports of a mysterious coronavirus-related pneumonia in Wuhan, China.

Unraveling – This piece conveys my thoughts when COVID-19 was declared a pandemic and it felt as if the entire world was falling apart.

Bluebird – Blissfully unaware of the pandemic, the bluebirds returned to my backyard in the spring of 2020 as they do every year, bringing with them the promise of rebirth and new beginnings.

Tattered Lace – While quarantine was stifling in many ways, it also provided me with the opportunity to tend to some long-neglected projects. While sorting through a box of old papers and memorabilia, I found several pieces of antique lace handmade by my grandmother and my great-grandmother, filling me with a comforting awareness of connectivity with past generations.

Dark Places – No matter how hard I tried to maintain a positive outlook, there were times when the anxiety and stress of pandemic life got the best of me, when the days seemed to blend into each other, time lost its value, and my spirits sank quite low.

Goodbye Again – Few lives remain untouched by COVID-19, and many lost family or friends to the disease, to the point that even the simplest farewell was tinged with apprehension that it might be the final goodbye.

Labyrinth – Sorting through the conflicting information surrounding the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 was as intricate and confusing as trying to escape from the center of a labyrinth.

Saudade – This Portuguese word describes deep nostalgic or melancholic longing for something beloved that might never be had again, and perfectly encapsulates my dismay at the thought that life might never again be as it was before.

Polaris – Just as the North Star (Polaris) helps travelers find their way, identifying a personal, metaphorical Polaris can provide us with a fixed destination we can depend upon in this rapidly changing world.

This Time with You – Although pandemic life has been fraught with challenges, it has also been filled with blessings. For me, one positive consequence of the abrupt slowdown in the pace of life was having more time to spend with my youngest son: sharing meals, engaging in long conversations, playing games, and watching television and movies. As a result, our relationship has never been stronger.

Metamorphosis – Hopeful that COVID-19’s “endemic” stage is imminent, I feel rather like a butterfly about to spread her wings and fly into the sunshine. But just as a caterpillar’s body must be destroyed for a butterfly to emerge, I believe I will never be able to return to the person I was before the pandemic, nor do I wish to. Rather, I am determined to remember the lessons I have learned during these challenging times and to emerge into the days ahead with new insights, beauty, and power.

This Time With You

agnosthesia - the state of not knowing how you really feel about something, which forces you to sift through clues hidden in your behavior, as if you were some other person—noticing a twist of acid in your voice, an obscene amount of effort put into something trifling, or an inexplicable weight on your shoulders that makes it difficult to get out of bed.
