Roughly two years after the release of their initial statement of intent, debut single “Toutpartout PT2” with its hypnotic ripples, Andi Haberl and Florian Zimmer aka Bella Wakame have successfully channeled the magic of a 2024 live recording (captured at Berlin’s Donau115 & Silent Green) into their first proper studio offering. You can hear inspirations ranging from Bitchin Bajas, Jeremiah Chiu to Groupshow (Jelinek, Leichtmann, Pekler), the hypnotic, intricate battle between form and freedom (the fun of momentary formlessness) continues to unfold over the course of 10 new tracks, featuring album guest Indra Dunis (Peaking Lights). Their first single "Shadows of Nambei" was very much inspired by the wonderful band Spirit Fest and their song "Nambei".

You can either shorten the reins, or you can loosen them – and give things more slack. With Bella Wakame, it’s definitely the latter. Constantly challenging each other, they’re tapping a whole new energy. Tons of different energies.

Based on the impulsive, propulsive interplay between drums/sensory percussion (Andi Haberl) and modular synthesizer (Florian Zimmer), the frenzied, free-form results take listeners into completely new dimensions – sonic worlds that don’t really sound anything...  more

Magical Mistakes releases upcoming LP “Peaking in the Pitch Black” via The Playground Records on the 1st July. Magical Mistakes has already garnered support from the likes of Vice/ Noisey, FACT Mag, CLASH, XLR8R, Earmilk, The Line of Best Fit, BBC and many more. Currently based in Osaka, Japan, Erik runs the small events and boutique label Perfect Touch, working with labels and artists (Leaving Records, Shigeto, Yosi Horikawa, Obey City etc.) on tours and cross cultural creative projects. “Peaking in the Pitch Black” is the first single to be lifted from the LP which will be released on the 20th May. 

Following the path of other artists, like Bon Iver, Magical Mistakes, (a.k.a Erik Luebs) moved to Shiba-san, one of Japan’s most rural villages, to create his sound. Here he was able to draw inspiration from his environment and also from the lineage of contemplative beats crafted by the vibrant community of Osaka artists, such as Shlohmo and Mount Kimbie. It’s clear when listening to Magical Mistakes that his style strives to combine Eastern and Western influences. His tracks are textural, bell-bathed, slow slung electronic compositions blended with organic instrumentation, Japanese motifs, and ambient sounds, that create an immersive underwater effect.

The enigmatic production collective 4 6 2 5 continue on their purposed sonic path with a 12” release which is in every sense a tale of two sides. 

‘Sedition’ as its namesake would suggest is a call to arms for the headstrong, a Drum & Bass clarion call to the faithful to drop tools and rebel. 

‘Crown of Nails’ paints from the same palette grounding down to a lower tempo and grinding into a percussive fervour, punctuated only with brief interludes of machine hiss and noise.
