This Is The Most Common Chord Progression In Pop Music and Indie Rock Of The Last Few Years: C, Am, E, And G. 

All The Chords Are In E Aeolian Except The E Chord. Play E Minor Pentatonic For Everything, But Play A G# Note (Instead Of G) On The E Chord (Because Of The G# In The E Chord). I Will Play This Lick In All Of The Caged Positions On The Guitar. Learn Them All, Then Practice To The Track That Is Left Over After The Demo.

Key: D Dorian / Aeolian

D minor pentatonic will get you through this whole thing, but watch the grids for some special tricks! Basically this jam consists of a D pedal tone with a few harmonies superimposed on top: Dm7 C Em7 and Bbmaj7. Everything fits into D Dorian except the Bbmaj7 - so watch out for that one, and flat that 6th (Bb). Shred on shredders!

Purple Shreds...

Key: G# Aeolian
Chords: G#m E C#m [Im bVI IVm]

This is a very common chord progression. This particular track is very loosely based on one of my favorite Dire Straits tracks "Brothers in Arms". It is endlessly satisfying to solo over, I hope you think to too. Start off with G# minor pentatonic, then try adding that b6 or 2 (E or A#) to the mix. Since this chord progression spends most of its time in the subdominant (bVI & IVm), that E note sounds extra good! Memorize how the b6 and 2 look and sound against the minor  pentatonic scale and you will have mastered the Aeolian mode without even thinking about it! Also, take it easy, Mark Knopfler style, you have more than 10 minutes to get those ideas out.

Slow Brothers in Arms & How to Magically Turn G# Minor Pentatonic to the Aeolian Mode

Key: E Aeolian (Natural Minor)
Chords: Em Bm Am Em [Im Vm IVm Im]

 This is a simple Im Vm IVm chord progression. Use E minor pentatonic the whole time and you will sound fine. Add the 2 and b6 at the right times and you'll sound amazing! All the chords are in the E Aeolian mode so you don't have to change scales at all, BUT you'll sound better if you play notes that fit the chords as they go by. Watch the neck diagrams at the bottom of the page to see how to follow the chords as they change!
