Scotland has long been a hot bed for underground electronic music; they really know their stuff up there and plying their trade longer than most are respected DJs and promoters Steve Cass & Justin Wilson with their No Strings Attached parties. Now in their 20th year the list of guests appearing alongside them is endless and the longevity of NSA is down to them constantly pushing their sound and bringing back the artists they personally like to hear. Based in Galashiels, south of Edinburgh the duo use a small basement in their local football club with a capacity of only 120. Guests have included Andrew Weatherall, Slam, Ivan Smagghe and Justin Robertson and they have also hosted numerous parties in the Scottish capital including A Love From Outer Space.  NSA never stick to one genre expect; anything from weird disco to techno and the odd classic thrown in with this fine mix for us.

Clandestino 048 - No Strings Attached

Eskimo Twins lay down the gauntlet for the new monthly NSA guest series with this fine selection and well crafted mix.

Timothy & Nathan met as students in Leeds, these two friends have shared their passion for music. The pair immersed themselves in the city’s clubbing and live music scenes and after discovering a mutual appreciation of Techno, Classic House, Indie, Acid and a lingering teenage love of Metal; they began making music together.

Early demos generated murmurs of approval amongst bloggers, clubbers, open-minded members of the indie glitterati and earned them a residency at the one of the UK’s most prominent club nights, Wax:On. Shows in the UK and Europe followed along with a couple of original EP’s and remixes which won them the support of fans and landed them a guest mix spot on Radio 1.

Summers spent darting back and forth between English festivals and Ibiza residencies were paired with winters spend in a dark South London studio full of old synths. Those long days helped tighten and focus their sound and resulted in a further run of original EP’s and a another host of remixes.

The Twins have continued to focus on their efforts in the studio in conjunction with DJing around the UK and Europe, and have gained a whole of new fans and champions including Mr Andrew Weatherall, who has not only consistently supported their productions in his DJ sets but also invited them into to play his A Love From Outer Space parties.

NSA Guest Mix Vol 1. Eskimo Twins

NSA favourite Sean Johnston brings us the second instalment of our monthly guest series with his aptly titled Hardway Bros. -  Jacobite Rising Mix

Acid House Veteran, Balearic Survivor, Hardway Bros, Reformed Techno Junkie and Freelance Disco Consultant Sean Johnston has been DJ’ing since the mid eighties and regularly travels the globe delivering his ‘Future Disco' sound to some of the worlds landmark underground club nights.  Also one half of supreme club night 'A Love From Outer Space’, he and long time friend Andrew Weatherall have been sharing their hard-earned audio finds for well over 5 years and have created a musical movement which has gained them a loyal following who travel far and wide to appreciate the pair’s extensive record collections.

His productions need no explanation with regular output on stellar labels such as Sabres of Paradise,Third Mind, Flashcomm ,Beard Science, Pointless Edits, Aniligital, History Clock, Astrolab, Luna Flicks, Throne of Blood, Correspondant & NEIN

Sean is impossible to pin down to a particular style as he is known to explore and experiment with a multitude of genres including ambient, balearica, dub, krautrock, post punk, proto house, un-disco and other curiosities that take his fancy so buckle up and prepare yourself for a lesson in how it should be done with another exceptional mix.

The quality of our guest mix series remains unbroken with the 3rd session coming courtesy of Andrew Weatherall who has had numerous appearances at our No Strings Attached club nights since the early years.  He always amazes us with the way he manages to capture the full attention of the club during his sets, pushing and challenging the crowd with his avant-garde performances. The long standing relationship continues when he returns next month with fellow slomo cosmic warrior Sean Johnston and this mix gives you a perfect taste of the ALFOS sound.

Subfield boss and Belgium’s ambassador to all things underground lays down the latest NSA guest mix. 
Mugwump’s 20 year career has cemented him as one of the scene's most important figureheads with his diverse productions appearing on the likes of Kompakt, R&S, Gigolo, Cocoon, Misericord, Eskimo, Permanent Vacation, Endless Flight…..and now on his own Subfield label, on which he's released his long overdue debut-album, "Unspell", to critical acclaim this year, as well as having turned Mugwump onto a fully-fledged live band for the stage. We are delighted to have him on board under his beloved DJ hat with this excellent mix and look forward to the album's "Deluxe Digital Edition", scheduled on Subfield on the 22 January 2016, with added new songs & live festival versions.

Uber cool French band Club Bizarre recorded this rather splendid mix to kick things off in fine style for 2016. Sam Berdah & Binda are the duo from Metz who have been consistently rising through the French electronic scene with their stand out original and eclectic sets. Their excellent Empoté EP is out now on Leoniser records and is well worth checking out.

“How many years does it take before you officialy become ‘a veteran’? Belgian producer Raphaël de Sauvage has been bossing it on the underground scene since ’96, so we reckon he’s earned that title without much sweat.“

From ’01 until ’09, his Digitalk FM show for Vibration Radio brought out a crop of Belgian guests that are better know today under their names as The Magician, Mugwump, Kolombo and Aeroplane.

The chameleonic producer has been penning fusions of ‘80s pop, dark basslines, and unhinged house beats since the mid-noughties - combinations that are by his standards ‘non-formulaic’, getting his Cabaret Nocturne cloak on in 2013, and recently signed to Beachcoma (owned by Fairmont, Metope and Sid Le Rock) with ‘Blood Walk’, which is nothing short of a slow-mo masterpiece.

In the short time since launching the project, he has also released original productions and remixes on Factor City (owned by Undo), Rotten City, Join Our Club (home of the majority of his original output), Disque Discos or Melómana.

With his musical vision he gained support from the cream of the contemporary electronic dance music crop such as Andrew Weatherall, Chloé, Cosmo Vitelli, Damian Lazarus, Daniele Baldelli, Erol Alkan, Ewan Pearson, Fairmont, Jennifer Cardini, Justin Robertson, My Favorite Robot, Tim Sweeney, Trevor Jackson …

Then there’s his monthly ‘K7 Nocturne’ podcast that sweeps up some of the shiniest exclusives and upcoming tracks from his fingertips, showing that one thing’s for certain: Raph’s got staying power.

Focusing on an ever broadening horizon, he continuing constantly his production efforts hiding himself beneath his bowler hat.

NSA Guest Mix Vol 15. Greg Wilson (Live at Love Festival)

Steve Cass & Justin Wilson met at high school in the late 80's and began listening to each other's music collections  whilst bunking school. Their taste spanned everything from Simple Minds to The Egyptian Lover but they really started getting serious about their music after hearing cassette tapes that were going around their local town and in particular a DJ from Windsor called Richard Bell who happened to be living with some older friends who had travelled South really caught their attention.

They started collecting the records they were hearing on the mix tapes and clubs and over the years spent a fortune mail ordering records from London's Flying, Fat Cat & Tag records, Frankfurt's Delirium and Glasgow's Bomba records and are still in touch today with some of the guys who worked or owned these shops.

As the record collections grew they wanted to share the sounds with friends so fast forward to May 1995 when they opened the doors to the first ever NSA night in the basement of a local football club.

The night was a huge success and quickly evolved into a fortnightly party which was when the journey began.  In between the NSA parties they frequented Edinburgh's Pure at the venue where NSA went on to relocate and SLAM that happened on a Friday at the Arches in Glasgow hosted by Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle who go by the same name and have played with the guys on a good few occasions.
The foundations of all these nights depended on the residents who knew how to set the scene and NSA offered the same opportunity for Steve & Justin to hone their skills in the art of the warmup as well as playing longer sets as they rotated between resident only parties and the guest DJs they would ask along to the club.

Track selection was the key thing for them and is still very evident in their sets to this day as they opt out of playing the latest big records and try to select music that will stand the test of time or has a bit more depth to it.  This is a far cry from a lot of clubs you go to these days with the music being banged out as soon as the doors open with little thought going into it. 
The same ethos is applied to the careful selection of the guests they would ask to play and the night must also have had an impact on them as leading names on the circuit return time and time again as well as contribute to their recent soundcloud series that was launched last year. www.soundcloud.com/nsaofficial
Andrew Weatherall is one DJ who has been regularly playing at NSA for over 15 years now after guesting at their 5th birthday party back in 2000. He described it as "a proper acid house party" after his recent appearance with Sean Johnston. SLAM are another example of world class DJs who return to play with Steve & Justin in the small basement which is worlds apart from the huge events they play week in week out.

These decisions are rewarded as the NSA parties always fill up and get going early rather than people just turning up for the main guest. It has also resulted in a loyal crowd that spans a couple of generations and is still supported by people who came along to the early parties as well as new people discovering it all the time. The people make  NSA and it has one of the friendliest crowds who really know there music and has been the birth place to a lot of great friendships.

If you look up the word combination retro-futuristic-cosmic-space-synth-techno-disco, in the Encyclopedia Galactica (not available on earthbound amazon), you will find an audiovisual holographic representation of the legendary Italo Brutalo.
 Not convinced yet? Well, it all began a long time ago in a far away mind space, when the visionary musicians George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Yellow Magic Orchestra and Giorgio Moroder met in a higher geometrical dimension during a lucid dreaming session. There, they improvisationally build a shrine that married a Farfisa organ, a Linndrum and an ARP Odyssey. The analog offspring of this cosmic union laid dormant in a rainbownized mothership cocoon, until it crackingly metamorphized, spreading its night club butterfly wings, enveloping the dance floors with pure loving 80’s synth and beat coolness in 2012 a la Italo Brutalo.
 A true believer in the capability of analog synthesizers, Italo Brutalo gets his first EP Paradiso Analogico released on Mozzarella Recordings in 2013. This release took the picture of Italo disco, being produced in a smokey 80’s studio in southern Italy, with is a knackered mixer desk, some fat mono synths covered in dust, a crappy digital effect box and a pre-programmed drum machine that somebody detached from a Farfisa organ that just plays an endless disco beat blasting angry Italo disco from the basement, to a cleaner perfectionist soundscape of the 21st century.
       Keeping his originality, Italo Brutalo releases the EP Systeria on the label Days of being wild in 2014 and the EP Spydor on Nein Records in 2015. By then, he has already done lots of well-hyped remixes for artists such as Kris Menace, Justin Faust, Moonbootica, Auxiliary tha Masterfader, James Rod, etc.
       With a turntable and synthesizer setup like few, Italo Brutalo performs world wide and has paid tribute to his Italo cause on dance floors and festivals, like Zoo Project in Ibiza, Wilde Renate in Berlin, Le Sucre in Lyon and Replicant Knights in Barcelona to name a few.
       Not limiting his skills and passion for his style to remixes, edits, tracks and DJ gigs, Italo Brutalo has also delivered numerous podcast sets to broadcasters such as Berlin Boombox, Death by Repetition, Nu Disco Your Disco, The Robot Scientists and others.
       As always, Italo Brutalo will keep it real, high quality and will keep spreading his original old school synthesizer disco music vibe in the future by taking listeners, night clubs and festival motherships on a truly original voyage.

Curses is the dark and romantic moniker from New York City native, Luca Venezia. Always blending the line between Electronic music and his Rock & Roll roots, Curses sounds like something from an illegal galactic warehouse party with flashes of ’80s Italo-disco and New Wave.

Berlin-based DJ duo and couple Brax Moody (Munich) and Vamparela (Thessaloniki) have been collaborating together since 2007, either as a DJ duo, in bands, or as remixers and music producers. Merging the rhythm and dynamism of Munich’s hip-hop clubs with the grime and attitude of Thessaloniki’s back-alley indie bars gives an idea of how to categorize Local Suicide: a straight-up soulful fusion of new wave, slow techno, acid house, chug or as they like to call it “technodisco”.

As DJs they’ve played all over Europe, Asia, North Africa, South America and the US with gigs at Off Sonar, Melt!, Amsterdam Dance Event, Berlin Festival and regular DJ slots at Salon zur Wilden Renate, Berghain, Watergate, Ritter Butzke and almost every club the German capital has to offer.

Craig has been an NSA favorite for a few years now, back in 2010 his track Birdshell on Instruments of rapture first grabbed our attention. Since then Craig has produced and remixed various outstanding records on his label Magicfeet Recordings. We had the pleasure of bringing him North of the border for his Scottish debut in 2013, he now returns to play NSA in 2017.

2) What have been your highlights from the last 12 months?

We had a great 2016 settling back into Edinburgh’s underground scene. All the parties we put on have been fantastic for many different reasons but it was a pleasure to have Optimo play for us for the first time.

3) What do you have lined up for the coming year?

We had a longer break than expected this Winter so we will be picking up our bi-monthly NSA presents again in Edinburgh’s Mash House kicking of with A Love From Outer Space on March 10th which has already sold out.

In May we celebrate 22 years of our club night which has lasted a lot longer than either of us anticipated and we have put together a very special line up to mark the occasion with Andrew Weatherall & Ivan Smagghe back to back all night long.

We will also be playing at this years Alfresco Festival in Tunbridge wells with a whole host of great acts, starting our irregular club at Sneaky Pete’s which is a really cool small space which we hope will have a similar intensity to the early parties we put on. We will be doing something for the Edinburgh Festival and then bringing up a few new acts to NSA before the year is out.

Mix of the Week #197: No Strings Attached

After a brief hiatus we kickstart the NSA guest mix series again with Frankfurt’s Lauer. We don’t need to say much about this DJ who is resident at the Robert Johnson which is perhaps the best club there is. Lauer is also one half of tuff city kids and he always seems to amaze us with the consistent quality he delivers both in the studio and in his sets. Hope you enjoy the next hour of music as much as we do.

Manfredas is making big waves on the worldwide electronic music scene and is one of the most exciting DJ’s we have heard play in recent years who’s sets always take you on a weird & wonderful trip. We were lucky enough to give him his Edinburgh debut last year along with Ivan Smagghe when they joined us for a great NSA party at the Mash House. We hope to have him back in the club one day in the not too distant future but in the meantime feed your ears on this….

NSA Guest Mix Vol. 31 - Manfredas

Next on NSAs mix series are Markus Schneider and Stefan Maurer aka „The Robot Scientists“, Saarbrücken/Germany-based DJs, vinyl collectors and fellow lovers of outer space, already known to many music connoisseurs for their numerous „all killer no filler“ DJ mixes, their edits of lost 1980s underground Synthpop and New Wave gems, as co-founders of the innovative „Emerald & Doreen Records“ label or as avid curators of the highly recommended „Something Spæcial“ (spaced out & special = spæcial) guest mix series. 

Their trippy and emotional, energetic and uplifting trademark sound oscillates magically between darkness and the light, between melancholy and euphoria, between the here and now and the next world, between dark disco, cosmic balearica and psychedelic house. 

Markus Schneider tells their story: „We are Saarlanders, not the typical Germans. We never were Techno kids. We loved the electronic underground sound from the beginning and listened to all Italo Disco, Synthpop, New Beat, Electro Funk and New Wave vinyl records we could get as teenagers. We fell in love with the sound of analogue synthesizers, the futurism, the fun, the melodies, the romanticism, the simplicity and the freedom of expression in them. No kidding, until today, there is nothing more beautiful for us than Italo Disco basslines - they simply make us happy! So no wonder we are probably the originators of the phrase, „An Italo bassline never fails“! Fisherspooner‘s „Emerge“ was an alert sign, and when Lindström‘s „I Feel Space“ came out, we knew it was time to start our DJ mission to bring the world the best electronic music influenced by Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode we know about. So we dusted off our record shelves, started digging on discogs and expanding our musical horizons, and here we are. “

We welcome Belfast born and Glasgow based DJ Jonnie Wilkes to the NSA guest mix series. Renowned for his adventurous and diverse sets either alone or as one half of Optimo there  is always a different energy when Jonnie is in town as the crowd really expect big things which he delivers on time after time. Constantly brilliant,  Jonnie is a genuine original and ambassador of the scene so we are delighted he was down for joining the series.

Motordiscs head honcho and all round top Parisian Daniel Weil joins the club. We love Daniel’s sound and being a true master of his craft has enabled him to secure various residencies around the world including the mighty Garage in Paris as well as various New York clubs.
Daniel has been booked the world over and played alongside pretty much everyone in the scene at some point in his musical career so turn it up loud and enjoy this super sweet set.

Fabrizio Mammarella is an Italian selector, producer and label owner among many other things in the world of Music.
Boasting a discography that includes dozens of clubbing anthems, remixes, as well as successful collaborations with Lauer (as Black Spuma), Rodion, and Clap Rules; he is also the “one man band” in Telespazio, an infamous side project focusing more on experimental music.

Since his first release in 2004, Fabrizio has been constantly delivering hits for labels such as DFA, Permanent Vacation, Correspondant, Les Disques De La Mort, Future Boogie and his own imprint Slow Motion Music / Wrong Era records, leading the Italian Dance Wave movement for over ten years.
Fabrizio is also the head behind Emet, a record label centred on limited special releases crawling in the realm of weirdo electronic music, especially cut for the quirkiest and demanding dancefloors.

Fabrizio has played and hosted label nights at some of the best clubs and festivals around the globe, with regular nights in Berlin and his home country of Italy. He is definitely not moving in slow motion
