Spent a couple hours playing with a pedal last night after re-watching the film Laputa: Castle in the Sky--here are five of the loops I really liked!

Hold Me, Like a River Does Water

a field recording of a saturday market, of breads and mushrooms and books and meats and clothes and vegetables.. made a little rhythmic. By the end of it, maybe it feels like music? Or maybe its just a little comforting to hear the same intonations a few times over, almost forgotten and then back again, just how they were before. Anyway, it's a good feeling to time yourself with the crowd speaking with the grocers bagging with their registers beeping.

a house beat in celebration of the beginning of spring, which I'm starting to think ought to mark the new year for all our calendars... but I was talking with somebody last night who said "then what would we have to celebrate in the middle of winter?"

Vernal Equinox

This is a fiction story based around snippets from 1980s interviews, fieldwork. Presented as a voice memo, this was an opportunity to sit with an archival recording, imagine an alternate setting that might lead to the same audio, and find a way to repackage it so the imagined history feels a little bit true. 
Here, it became a bit post-apocalyptic - what was originally a recording about livestock auctioneer chants became an underground herding call, maybe because the natural reverb of whatever barn or warehouse the interview was recorded sounded like it could be a dark cave...

The photo is from Maierato in the 50s, a family slide.

Cowman

Found some samples of the Korg M1 online today, and so happy I did.. I used to play on my mom's back in the day, that piano sound is SO nostalgic. The drums and piano are sounds from the M1, and the rest of the sounds are from Earthbound's waveform synthesis trip, which I just can't get over. It's computer music, through and through.

a groggy look from frozen windows, morning steps light down a shining road
confused and bright, the town becomes a magic welcome cold

kind of a video game-y soundscape. I'm remember all the wintery towns in pokemon, that sort of world, i think. 

made from a field recording on the voice memos app of iphone 4, my friend Nate and I playing an amazing song called Pink and Blue on flute and guitar at our old workplace, the UCLA Music Library.

The Way I Feel about Cats (2019) as Expressed by an Edit of the Japanese Production (1983)

My last post, so it had better be good! Soundcloud has capped me - I’ve reached my upload limit. This piece is the most recent thing I’m working on, so it’s lucky that it feels like a good send-off. 

It’s sound for a video game - source audio on which every sound effect for your character (if you choose this aesthetic) is based. I’ll post an explainer ~the modulations to my website when the game is published, and we’re planning to post all of these source soundscapes as an album the closer that date comes. Keep an eye on nicoloscolieri.bandcamp.com for this and also a soundscape for the contemporary dance work Mayfever, set to premiere in November 2019. 

There’s a lot on the horizon~! My website nicoloscolierisound.neocities.org is a good hub for all my sound work, but I’m hoping to build up little pockets on the web for asmr, sound art, radio…
