"The joys and tears of Australian engagement in universal human rights in the United Nations.’’

In the 2017 NTEU Annual Lecture (Thursday 16 Nov 2017), the Honourable Michael Kirby AC, CMG, past Justice of the High Court of Australia will explore the national engagement of Australia with the United Nations initiatives on universal human rights that date back to the Charter (1945) and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) adopted with an Australian, HV Evatt, in the chair as third President of the UN General Assembly. 

He will describe the close early involvement of Australia in the UN system and the loosening of compliance in recent years, including with respect to refugee, anti-terrorism and other laws. He will also describe his own engagement in many UN human rights activities, including LGBT, HIV and legal issues, as well as the UN mandates he has held on human rights in Cambodia and North Korea.
