Don’t get me wrong, it’s not everyone who says God! God! God! Will enter into the kingdom. But only those who do according to His will. 

And some of you will say: I prophesied in your name, I healed the sick, I performed miracles, but Jesus will say “I never knew you, away evil doers” Mathew 7:21-23.

Song Background

In Mathew 5:14 Jesus tells His disciples “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. “

“Spotlight” is a reminder to every believer who proclaims the Gospel of Christ that the world including the devil himself is closely watching every move you make. 

Each of the three verses of this song starts with the lines “akumakuwona/ukuyesa akugona?/makamaka if you say ndiwe Obona” (they are watching you/you think they are sleeping?/especially if you say you are a born again Christian)

Verse 1 talks about the responsibility that we as believers (especially kingdom leaders, artists and those with influence) have towards our church members, desciples, fans, supporters, admirers. They trust and value us so much such that if we commit a blunder/or backslide, their faith in God is negatively affected. It further goes on to say blunders/scandals committed by believers receive more exposure and coverage in the media citing “the Friday news paper a.k.a weekend times in Malawi” as an example, because a believer’s life is like acting a play on World stage where you have many eyes following your steps, cues, lines etc.

The chorus backed by Joshua Rhema Nkhata and the melodious voices of Melody Mijoya, has the lines:

(Spotlight) we gotta pray for our brothers in the spotlight let us pray for out sisters in the spotlight.

Literal translation of the Chorus:

Spotlight is sweet but at the same time it is dangerous, especially when you claim to be a born again Christian. When you are zealous for the Lord, the devil wants to make you fall while everybody is watching. Let us be shrewd and let us pray so that weapons forged against Christians should not prosper.  We gotta pray for our brothers in the spotlight, let us pray for our sisters in the spotlight.

Verse2 tackles a range of critical issues in the Christian circles. It talks of how some people will be around you and your ministry as friends, supporters etc. but when things go wrong they are the first ones to laugh at you. It cites Galatians 6:1 as a scriptural lesson of how backsliders/people who have slackened in faith should be handled, instead of exposing their mistakes to the world.

Verse3: The third line of this verse says:

"You’re in the spotlight if you shining your God’s light /you’ll never shine your light in peace without a fight"

Whatever you do as a Christian, you will always meet criticisms or opposition from some quarters. People will always search for wrongs in your ministry/character etc. and one line says: “others are looking for wrongs even in this song…they’ll try to make you weak if you seem strong.”
 
All in all the best we can do as believers is to pray for one another and give each other direction where necessary rather than backbiting and exposing each other’s mistakes. A house divided can never stand. Remember the world is groaning for the manifestation of the sons and daughters of God (Romans 8:19) but the same world is happy to see strong sons and daughters falling.

"Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves."But beware of men, for they will hand you over to the courts and scourge you in their synagogues…(Mathew 10:16-17)"
