ILHAN ERSAHIN'S ISTANBUL SESSIONS - Haliç

Resistance is Fertile was recorded using layered first take performances. All tracks
were recorded to “dance music” tempo markings (between 120-172 beats per minute, or BPM)
beginning with voice memo beatboxes, layered on top by drums, synths and finally horns. These
multitracked improvisations were then edited and mixed into the compositions heard on the
album.

JMMR is built for guests, and the album features blinding improvisational contributions from
reedmen to the stars Stuart Bogie and Cochemea Gastelum, and global sensations Morgan Price
and Ricardo Quinones.

A new musical endeavor from Rio Di Janeiro, Brasil. 
Cometa just may be the antidote to the rising dread that you may be feeling from hyper-modern living.
	 
At the helm of Cometa is the musical oddity known simply as “Kassin.”
While Cometa may be a new name to punters,
Kassin is no stranger to the industry.  He has enjoyed a fruitful and inspired career.
Garnering praise and glowing reviews from even the most snobbish North American online magazines.
Instrumental music is notoriously difficult for North American audiences to warm to.
In the words of a famed rock drummer from Seattle once said,
“black people dance to the rhythm, white people dance to the lyrics.” 
The debut album by Cometa is a prime example of how Kassin’s songwriting effortlessly glides 
between genres and cultures alike.

Cometa’s music inhabits a space in a parallel netherworld. 
Imagine the virtual landscapes of both “The Truman Show” and “The Sims”
with the steely twang of a guitar from a Spaghetti Western film.
The laid-back but energetic attitude of Surf Rock, and the sleaze of late ’60’s Italian pulp cinema.
You could easily listen to this while exploring the Grand Canyon,
cruising the Italian coastline with your 1960’s yellow,
Fiat convertible, or waiting for that perfect wave at Jaws, Maui.

Silver is Ilhan Ersahin's latest project and a bit of a departure from his other musical undertakings. A group consisting of himself on Rhodes keyboards and Tenor Saxophone, trumpet icon Eddie Henderson, bass legend Juuini Booth and drums/percussion sorcerer Kenny Wollesen . Silver emphasizes on mood and tone . The "bite-sized" approach of this ensemble translates as a string of 5-minute individual pieces .

If you ask Ilhan Ersahin about the magic happening at 62 Avenue C, he'll give you an enigmatic answer: "We're just playing music."

The truth is, from the inside out, it's just about as simple as that. Nublu, the East Village outpost that Ilhan started in 2002, is like a little clubhouse where friends get together and just play music with each other.

But, as is often the case, what seems most simple is most special. The magic under the little blue light that marks the entrance to the club emanates from a group of players from all over the world with regulars hailing from Brazil, Eastern Europe, the UK, the US and everywhere between. What's more, they happen to be among the most sought after musicians around. They've regularly shared stages and made recordings with Herbie Hancock, David Byrne, Sun Ra, Beck, and John Zorn to rattle off a few. Nightly these players come together at Nublu to share their ideas and create music together. Their improvisations reflect all their influences, shared and individual. There's no telling what combination will rise to the top on a given night. About the only certainty is that it will sound both fresh and familiar.

Quite often, the improvisations of these musicians give rise to songs, and those momentary communions of musicians become bands - bands like Kudu, Brazilian Girls, Wax Poetic, Forro in the Dark, Love Trio, and the Nublu Orchestra conducted by Butch Morris - all representing different moments in time and different sounds, but a similar ideal. That ideal - the indefinable sound that stretches across the creation of every band and DJ within the club's walls - is known around the house as the Nublu Sound.

The Nublu Sound is what made the necessity for Nublu Records clear. Whereas many labels that come about develop out of a few people's desire to go out and search for music,
