Industrial, intricate and intense, Mercy System’s music occupies a middle ground between bass music genres including techno, garage, dubstep and grime. Hailing from the outskirts of Manchester and drawing from an early start playing drums in hardcore and metal bands, his rhythmic fascination is harnessed to create a complex sense of tension and release in music. 

This 4-track EP is a pulsing exploration of the techno and left-field bass genres, featuring driving beats, distorted synths, and experimental crisp soundscapes. Aimed at the discerning clubgoer, with themes of urban decay and introspection, the EP evokes the raw power and texture of nighttime, creating an atmospheric vibe that's sure to captivate any crowd. A masterful exploration of the darker side of club culture.

A1. Approach and Identify: A bassy club weapon, clear UK influence. The peak-time selection to mash all the heads on the dancefloor and push the sub 60hz pressure. 
A2. Time Chant: One for a lights off, heads down rave. An introspective, philosophical meditative journey crafted by elusive atmospheres backed by pulsating drums. 
B1. Voids: Perfect for late-night sets and intimate club settings. A serious rhythm that sucks all the air out of the room before returning to a hard-to-classify catchy bassline with subtle breakbeat decorations.
B2. Judas: Perfect to transform a club into a hypnotic groove. A flourishing wobbly bass complemented with a 2-step beat and dancehall vocals but with layers of texture. 

Artist Statement: On this EP, I wanted to explore much more rolling dance floor beats, but still keep that texture and granular vibe from my earlier releases. I was listening back to older hardcore and jungle (I paid homage with the Approach and Identify sample) and was particularly inspired by the dark environmental sounds on No U Turn Records. I guess I'm trying to tow the line between straight up soundsystem workouts and eyes down spatial grooves. Thanks to all the pioneers who pushed electronic music forward, and thanks to Robin for the hardware masters, bringing these tunes even closer to that vibe.

"All tracks on this album were written between 2008 and 2013 in Saint-Petersburg, Russia. It was a time of early experimentation with micro-sound and an exploration of different aspects of my musical identity.

«Étude» is an instrumental composition often designed to perfect a particular musical skill. Whilst making these songs I have been discovering and practicing new techniques. Be it mindful glitch-programming, sampling dad’s jazz records, or testing limits of the simplest FL Studio synth 3xOSC. The main goals were pretty much the same every time, to find fresh formulas and unusual patterns for new audio experiences.

Some of the tracks were made before signing to Med School (Searching The Truth, Microfunk, Phantasmagoria). Some were not included in my first three albums for one reason or another (Banana Electro Bebop Jam, I’m Not A Human, Dub Forest, Punk’s Not Dead). Projects for ‘Insight’, ‘Galactic Glider’, ‘Trash Bin Galaxy’ were lost, and so I used the latest found rendered versions here.

Genre-wise this album is quite broad. From ambient and experimental dub to wonky jazzy hip-hop and post dubstep. But, despite the diversity of the material I think it still has a strong identity and tells a complete musical story, from our first minimalist manifesto ‘Microfunk’ and deep leftfield drum & bass rollers, to more experimental twisted and sometimes dark ideas on the B side.
