Veronica Vasicka is a photographer, musician, DJ and founder of the epic record label and on-line music resource Minimal Wave. As one of the founding members of East Village Radio, she managed the station during its pirate days and began collecting obscure and long forgotten gems that fell somewhere between the Cold Wave, Post Punk and Minimal Synth genres.

Cititrax is thrilled to present a split EP by two massive talents, Borusiade and The Sixteen Steps. Borusiade, originally from Bucharest, Romania began as a DJ in the early 2000s and then started producing music in 2005. With a background in classical music, she combined her love of raw electronics, obscure themes and melodic lines to create her own signature sound. She has released on the Cómeme label as well as Corresepondent. Infatuation and Confutation are dark, moody and intense tracks that catch you upon first listen. The flip side of the Promises and Infatuation EP features The Sixteen Steps, the brainchild of George Lanham who cut his musical teeth DJing and running events in the south of England. We have been listening to many of his tracks endlessly for a while now. They’ve also been a highlight of Veronica Vasicka‘s DJ sets as of late. Signals From The South and Promises On The Run are both immaculately produced, hypnotic, dance floor killers. They are sparse ebm meets smoky warehouse techno, and offer a wonderful contrast to Borusiade’s layered emotive tracks that reminisce of an East Village club in the 1980s. Themes of infatuation, appearances, and anonymity appear throughout this EP from the music itself right through to the cover art. Limited edition vinyl pressing of 999 copies, first 500 copies are pressed on black inside milky clear vinyl (each record is one of a kind), housed in a matte printed sleeve. Minimal Wave is proud to present an LP of 6 songs by cult U.K. project Scenes de la Bohème, entitled ‘Standing in the Rain’. Scenes de la Bohème was formed by Anthony Waites in London, in 1981 with an innate desire to create poetic, subversive pop music. Without any intention of ever signing to a record label, he self-released one untitled 7” single in 1982, an edition of 150 copies, with money funded to him by his parents for his 21st birthday. He often used borrowed synthesizers to record his music in various bedroom studios and friends’ houses supplemented by his beloved cherry red Hagstrom guitar. The two songs that he released were ‘Zara’, an earworm of a pop song about a longed for girl standing in the rain, and ‘The Tale of The Butterfly’. Unlike many other bands of the time, he never sent the single or his demos to John Peel, The NME, Beggars Banquet, nor Rough Trade and so it was lost to obscurity until a few record collectors ‘discovered’ it some 15 years ago. Scenes de la Bohème’s Untitled 7” single continues to fetch exorbitant prices in collectors’ circles so we are especially happy to be able to make this release available in the form of a newly mastered mini LP, which includes four unreleased tracks that Waites had recorded at the time. The LP is pressed on 180 gram vinyl, as a limited edition of 600 (300 black and 300 transparent yellow), and features beautifully restored images of Waites and his main partner in crime, Seamus Fitzsimmons. The inner sleeve holds Waites’ story, his musical inspirations and explorations as an Irish youth growing up in London in the early 1980s and discovering the avant-garde. Release date is April 23rd. Digital release to follow.

Minimal Wave proudly presents a full length double album entitled “Further Strategies” by synthpop band Turquoise Days. Hailing from Jersey, Channel Islands, Turquoise Days was formed in 1981 by Luciano Brambilla and David Le Breton shortly after meeting at a nightclub in St Ouens called Waves. They used Roland synthesizers and drum machines, as well Yamaha synthesizers and Fender guitars along with tape effects and vocals. Throughout the 1980s, they self-released many cassettes, as well as the renowned masterpiece Grey Skies / Blurred 7” single. They were selected for the Radio Luxembourg song contest in 1985 and received press for their releases and appearance there. Their music can be described as melodic, emotive new wave. The music featured here includes the songs from the long sold out Alternative Strategies release from 2009, remastered, along with a a collection of previously unreleased material. The release is limited to 999 hand-numbered copies. The records are pressed on 160 gram white vinyl and come in a matte heavyweight gatefold jacket designed by Phil Yamada, featuring unpublished photographs of the the band inside the gatefold. Further Strategies will be available for pre-order soon, with a release date in early November.

The painter who admitted himself to a mental asylum created many beautiful works of art.
Even though suffering through anxiety, & being mentally unstable, had a cool dark sense of humor.
He would go to calmer environments to work in but still went into depressive states.
The beauty that comes out of such darkness is what draws me to him, I liked how late he started in his years to start painting but also that he never gave up besides having a  troubled life.
