Chiptunes or chip musics (sometimes called 8-bit music) is music written in sound formats where all sounds are synthesized in real time by a game console's sound chip.1

The "golden era" of chiptunes was from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s, when these chips were the only way to play music on computers. This medium gave composers great flexibility to create their own "instrument" sounds, but since early sound chips only had simple tone generators and noise, it also placed significant limitations on sound complexity. Chiptunes often thus appear "harsh" or "squeaky" to the average listener. These chiptunes are closely related to video game music, sharing culture and origin with them.
