Earlier this year, Duncan Steer of the UK indie pop band, Pastel Collision, found himself living near French singer Anne Brugiere in London, and decided to make a record with her singing in English. The result is French Pop Dream, a collaborative inspired by the sound of Francoise Hardy and the atmosphere of 1960s Paris. Steer describes their single, “Eurostar, the Musical,” as “soft-voiced summer pop about belonging, waitressing, and doomed romance, set on the Eurostar and in cafés across Europe.” Their songs, he says, are about “people in Europe moving from country to country, looking to see if life will be different for them.” 

On “Eurostar, the Musical,” Duncan and Anne worked with accordionist and piano player Myriam Gasser and producer Jamie West. They also enlisted 19-year-old photographer Fanny Latour Lambert to shoot the video. “We wanted the songs to have a setting,” says Steer, “like a film, to sound like they came from a place. Will you be a different person when you go somewhere else? Will you find someone else?” A full-length album accompanied with a series of short films is slated for early 2014. 

Some Gorgeous Accident’s D. describes the new single, “A Constant Rotation,” as a song about “time lost, time gained and lost again.” In the song, he says, “everything is gradually brought together by time, but is also shattered by it. It goes back, almost abruptly, to the beginning, although not quite in the same way.” Like (lyricist and vocalist) Taylor (Crawley) says near the end of the song, it’s cyclical. It turns into something both familiar and unfamiliar.” “A Constant Rotation” is the second collaboration between Some Gorgeous Accident and Crawley, who appears courtesy of Jenny Arson.

The French Pop Dream, "Eurostar, The Musical"

Prolific beatmaker Jorge Wieneke of Similar Objects puts together some big ideas for his new release, “Tilde”. Drawing from the meaning of the symbol as “similar to” or “approximately”, and its function as a mark of suspension, Wieneke creates a record that puts his emotions in suspended animation. “Tilde” is also a play on estimates and approximations – the beauty of uncertainty, doubt, and self-discovery. The tracks are arranged according to when they were written, telling the events of Wieneke’s story chronologically. “There’s a hidden story in there, a loose sequel to Finding Astral Lovers”, he says. “I guess it channels a little bit of my bluer side; it’s a lot more melancholic than my other releases.” “Tilde” features collaborations with guest artists Lustbass , August Wahh, and Rh Xanders.

“You Know It’s You” is the first single from Slow Hello’s debut album, Audio Baby. Since the release of 2011′s infectious lo-fi tracks Minty Fresh and Cold Turkey, songwriter Selena Salang has expanded her indie pop project to a full band setup, with Erwin Hilao of The Strangeness on drums, Marc Inting of Twin Lobster on bass, and Russ Davis on guitars. As a four piece, Slow Hello comes with a fuller, more evolved sound, combining noisier guitar-driven tracks with the delicate, organic sensibilities of Salang’s solo efforts. The subtle layers on “You Know It’s You” showcases the softer side of the band’s forthcoming album, as do the melodic guitar riffs on the b-side, “Details”, a cover from Eggboy, the long-running cult project of Diego Mapa (from Number Line Records’ duo Tarsius).

Audio Baby is scheduled for release mid-November and will feature rerecorded versions of previously released singles and leaked demos.

Half Awake in the Morning Haze is the latest release from Francis Maria Regalado’s synthpop project, Love in Athens. Francis’ recent move to Manila influenced the overall sound of this release, which he describes as “a restless account of a change in scenery, the surge of traffic, and the low mechanical hum of the capital’s railways”. The theme is evident throughout this collection of songs, from the compelling opener “Shell Canvas”, a track awash in lush, atmospheric guitar lines and unrelenting, to-and-fro shifts in part and rhythm, to the hazy, infinite swooning of the ending track “Closure”.

Francis describes Love in Athens as “an endeavor subject to the wills and desires of my own emotions. I have no say in the matter. It happens by itself.”
