Following the release of debut EP "Numeral" (2020), Swiss drummer & producer Philippe Adam continues his sonic journey by paying tribute to a penchant for booming sub-basses, intricate percussion and gloomy soundscapes. Having since moved to Berlin, numeral picks up on very current feelings of melancholy, longing and disorientation that originate in the constricting reality of 2021. Nevertheless, in addition to the somewhat eerie mood, a touch of confidence shimmers through, which reminds us of the nights in which we could still enjoy the beats in dark cellars pounding from booming boxes.

The single track "Landing" emerged trough a collaboration with English producer Will Brown aka Brecon, who first gained attention in 2018 with his debut EP "Cairn" and who his best known for his remixes for Max Cooper, Rob Clouth and Morcheeba. Brecon's signature synth arpeggios and melodic piano parts simultaneously complement and contrast the ominous atmosphere created by numerals careful arranged production. The result is a persistently evolving four-on-the-floor dance track with a great payoff.

"Primeval" represents an attempt to open up new perspectives and thus new possibilities for action in the face of an increasingly rapidly changing environment, through a cognitive journey towards the idea of an original age of the earth. This journey is intended to trigger various moods and images, characterized by fictional ideas 
of a primitive nature with lush vegetation and bizarre life forms. In the midst of this environment, which seems foreign and sometimes even hostile, man is at first in the position of an external observer. Gradually, however, he understands his belonging and his integration in the global system of the earth and begins to adapt his way 
of thinking and acting. The emphasis shifts from exploiting natural resources for one's own needs towards respecting the ecosystem and one's community of organisms and the inanimate environment. In the spirit of convivialist ideas, there is a need to correct the image of humanity shaped by Western consumer capitalism and to reorient it towards cooperation rather than competition. Individual pride must be overcome in order to create a society that conveys inclusive values rather than unilaterally rewarding self-interest

The rhythmic dimension of the artist is in the spotlight, with tribal effluxes of bongos and congas restructured to create a disturbing and heavy atmosphere. Through this EP, the Bern based musician shows that his background as a drummer is not only good to accompany a band on stage, but also to be put to the benefit of electronic experimentation. The metallic kalimbas that we hear on several tracks are the main witnesses of this. The first track, "Marauder", is a languid introduction into the world imagined by this EP. Sometimes vicious, sometimes enigmatic, this track is also the one that most reflects numeral's current work. "Anthropo" is comparable to a power plant that is on the verge of implosion. The intensity generated is palpable from the beginning to the end 
of the track. Enjoyable! Sunshine of the EP, "Mayhem" shines by its lines of synthesizer of a crazy efficiency. If this EP had to be assigned to a musical style, it would probably be electronica. But with "Hybris", Philippe Adam shows that he also masters the codes of deep-house, leaving the mainstream aspects of the movement aside. Mechanical, brutal, violent: here are some adjectives qualifying the noise interlude of the EP "Distorpia". A sound-design that sends the listener in a disturbing and rainy universe, not leaving indifferent. The final track of the EP takes with ingenuity all the codes set up on the five previous tracks. We find there all the qualities of the artist: a myriad of tribal drums perfectly mastered; the art of the game of nuance between silent rises and unbearable intensity; distorted pads and harmonics which make vibrate in us a mixed feeling of fear and hope.

Organic, thrilling, transcendent: here is how Swiss drummer and producer Philippe Adam describes his project numeral; a sonic universe of rumbling sub-basses, clever audio design and, at times, gloomy and dystopian landscapes. Meticulous electronic music that draws on beat-driven electronica and vibrant ambient.

While officiating as a drummer for various swiss indie electronic bands (The Lugubrious, Faux Tales), numeral has developed his own production methods and sound aesthetic throughout the years. In his personal work prevail sometimes dark atmospheres, sometimes luminous melodies. An inclination to distort, disassemble, modify sounds with great attention to details: this is what gives numeral's apocalyptic sound its full magnitude.

Influenced by a great variety of artists, ranging from the concrete music of composers such as Pierre Schaeffer and Edgard Varèse to contemporary IDM and downtempo artists in the like of Jon Hopkins, Rival Consoles or even Four Tet, numeral has carefully worked on his productions over the past few years in Bern and Berlin.

Following the debut ep “numeral” (2020, Irascible Music), the single collab "Landing" with Bristol producer Brecon and numerous remixes for Swiss and international artists, numeral has teamed up with Swiss electronic label "Blizzard Audio Club" to share his second ep “Primeval” in early June 2022.
