An early DnB collab between Optical and Dom & Roland on the legendary Moving Shadow imprint. 1997. This is a special dubplate VIP. As you can probably hear it was arranged by hand live from a bunch of loops...sometimes I used to create a track like this instead of a fixed arrangement to see which way it should flow in the final track...quick draw desk mutes and live eq sweeps...another era...

Moving from São Paulo to London 11 years ago, Brazilian producer S.P.Y didn't take long to assert his arrival to the UK's d'n'b scene, releasing on Metalheadz in 2005. 

Later releasing on some of the genre's finest labels, including Soul:r, Innerground and Hospital Records, Carlos Lima has shown his innate production ability with tracks like 'By Your Side' and heavenly remixes of Submotion Orchestra's 'All Yours' and Zero 7's 'In The Waiting Line'.

Skankandbass is dedicated towards the official promotion of record labels and artists in the world of drum & bass music. Since inception in 2009, Skankandbass has unearthed some of the freshest talents in the scene and has opened many doors for unsigned artists. Now, through Skankandbass Introducing we release a series of free download singles which aims to spread the work of the best unsigned, newcomer artists who deserve more recognition.

Jonny Porter aka Motiv, has quickly established himself as one of the scene’s brightest talents.  Having first showcased his sound in his hometown of Manchester; he has cemented his status over the past few months with releases on Delta9, Liondub, Celsius and Co-Lab among others.  He now shows off the versatility of his production on ‘SNB068: Viaduct / Zero’, coupling a soulful liquid A-side with a heavyweight roller on the flip.

Nu:Tone is a name that automatically populates in a seasoned drum & bass brain upon hearing the words Hospital Records. But Nu:Tone’s first drum and bass release was actually put out in 2001 on John B’s label Beta Recordings after the pair became friends and established the local club night ‘Substance’ in Durham.  On returning to his hometown Cambridge, Nu:Tone met a squad of like-minded musical mates and eventually released the ‘Future Sound of Cambridge’ EP on Hospital in 2004.

With five solo studio albums to boast as well as a wealth of singles, and EP’s, Nu:Tone’s tracks can always be heard across dancefloors and the festival circuit. From his first studio album “Brave Nu World” to third studio album “Words and Pictures” (which was perhaps his most ambitious project) and all before, in-between and after, Nu:Tone’s output always gleans the full support of the wider dance music community’s biggest tastemakers from Annie Mac and Rene La Vice to Toddla T and David Rodigan. Nu:Tone regularly tours Europe, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, confirming his global appeal. 

Nu:Tone can also be heard as part of other collaborative projects, like Nu:Logic, the Hospital Records signed sibling duo of him and Logistics. Or as part of Danism, under which he releases house with great success. Danism’s track “No Limits’ reached number one on the Traxsource chart in 2019 and received DJ support from house royalty Louie Vega, Danny Krivit and Todd Terry. 

Having a keen ear for other people’s music is something that we see from Nu:Tone in a multitude of projects. While working for Hospital as part of the A&R team, he also continues to work as a mastering engineer for Innerground, Spearhead and Soulvent Records. He fondly states an annual highlight for him is the stage he curates with Logistics at Sardinia’s famous Sun & Bass festival each year, and it’s clearly something he enjoys as he’s been back every year since 2003 (except one year when his eldest was born!)
