Mulatu Astatke/The Heliocentrics - Chinese New Year

The latest in Names You Can Trust's series of tropical 45s is a sublime Dub Cumbia from El Combo Chimbita, an offshoot of the fast-rising MAKU Soundsystem. MAKU and El Combo Chimbita are comprised of young first-generation New Yorkers from Colombia, and their sound combines the duel trombone attack of classic NYC Salsa with a rootsy, bass-heavy, laid back groove. Completely organic, "Puro Show" has an undeniable funky charm.

The flip sees the much anticipated return of Greenwood Rhythm Coalition, who completely hotrod the original track, adding new instrumentation while turning it into a hard charging Ska that sounds like the Studio One house band live in Cartagena. "Puro Rock" is primed and ready for the dance floor!

The second time Eshete - aka the Ethiopian James Brown aka Abyssinian Elvis - has appeared in the series to date. This time in jazzier form. Upbeat piano, guitar and distinctive vocals accompanied by tough but subtle drums.

Originally released on 7” on Amha Records AE 780 in 1974. Needless to say, it’s nigh on impossible to find.



B: Girma Bèyènè - Ene Negn bay manesh

Reminiscent of the great works of Mulatu, ‘Ene Negn bay manesh’ is a beautifully deep groover, featuring Beyene’s vocal - unusual for him; he usually recorded instrumentals - subtle guitar, organ and horn lines.

Originally released, once again, on Ethipion label Amha Records AE 210, in 1969.

Kokoroko Afrobeat Collective - Colonial Mentality

TERANGA BEAT proudly presents composer Kyriakos Sfetsas and his Greek Fusion Orchestra, an artist with a truly multifaceted body of work. Sfetsas formed GFO in 1976, in  order to accomplish an ambition dating back to his 1960's Avant Garde period in Paris: to create a piece of work that would expand the boundaries of Greek traditional music. The result is a Progressive-Jazz Fusion masterpiece comprising complex and intriguing compositions, and performed by Athens' best musicians of the day. The recordings on this album, which form only a small part of his overall body of work, are previously unreleased and their quality is truly impressive. We sincerely hope you will enjoy them!

It’s an enormously exciting event to have this album reissued in a gorgeous, remastered edition, which will bring the music of this master artist to a new audience, and hopefully ignite a new interest in the exhilarating Ukwuani sound of the 1970s and 80s. If you’re about to listen to this music for the first time, you’re definitely in for a treat. 

Franco Lee Ezute died in 2013 at the age of 64, but thanks to this record his harmony will continue to reign supreme.
