Lagartijeando is the name of producer, musician and DJ Mati Zundel. Born, raised and currently living in a small town on the outskirts of Buenos Aires called Dolores. Strongly influenced by his travels through Latin America, Mati’s signature psychedelic dance tracks latch onto everything from traditional folk sounds from the Bolivian altiplano to the jungle beats of Brazil.

Mati hypnotically fuses his traditional influences (with an emphasis on shaman chant and charango loops) with contemporary electronic beats, creating a sound that once left NPR speechless.

Freshly into 2017, Mati brings us El Gran Poder via Wonderwheel— named after an important Aymara festival that takes place in Bolivia and Peru, purely to celebrate family. At these festivals, the community also celebrates their culture and the importance of the collective identity. The album was recorded in Mati’s town, Dolores, outside of Buenos Aires. Once again taking a huge variety of sounds— this time influenced by Brazilian house, afro-brazilian rhythms, and folkloric Andean music.

Along the sun’s cosmic belt, the renewal of Argentine folktronics takes another twist: the movement - regional, continental and global - has emerged with a strong female presence in the Buenos Aires scene. Enter Dat García, one of the freshest and most captivating female artists out there right now. ZZK Records welcomes her to the family and invites you to listen to her 1st album, Maleducada (Un or poorly educated). 

Maleducada is Dat’s way of expressing and exorcizing through song the bad emotional upbringing common among so many young people of her generation, the children of adults censored during the tough times of 1980s Argentina, when the military dictatorship silenced, oppressed and even murdered many of those dedicated to artistic or political expression. While women were brought up to be respectable housewives and good mothers, the youth of an empowered generation was born alongside democracy and today they walk the streets of Buenos Aires. 

Dat is one of the spokeswomen and storytellers of the new women’s movement that questions traditional values and emphasizes body consciousness to construct a new more equal society. 

“We weren’t taught to be free to feel, nor were we taught to eat well or look after our bodies. Researching this made me realize that we are emotional machines, and that can translate into health or disease,” says Dat, who during the production of the album went through a healing process to recover from a rare form of cancer, which motivated her investigation into the power of the emotional over the physiological and expression as healing therapy. That’s where Maleducada came from. 

Dat García grew up in Monte Grande, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, and from a young age she was involved in Argentine folklore music. In 2013, she immersed herself in digital music, opening up a world of tools for expressing her inner sounds, with the help of Pedro Canale aka Chancha Via Circuito. There, Dat started to flirt with the idea that styles ranging from chacarera to trip hop, sounds of synths, charango and flutes, could all be mixed together. Her powerful music is composed with lyrics that invite the listener into her world and a groove in which the timeless Latino folklore gene persists. 

This is a golden age. While in 2006, Zizek was first a club night and then a sensation, ten years on ZZK is a combination of a school, a platform, a record label, and an audiovisual production company, bringing together voices and sounds for the digital generation. Dat dialogues with the panorama of new (and old) women’s voices in the region like Mariana Baraj, Sofía Viola, La Yegros, and also Juana Molina and Li Saumet. And at the same time, her work crosses over with the whole scene of this golden age, where producers are free to make the music they want, inspired by past traditions but always looking towards the future. 

Dat forms part of this new generation of musicians who explore their roots, manifesting in new ideas, with new technologies. Dat has a timeless vision of what folklore is, one that speaks of a being and a feeling. “You don’t need to make music in an adobe hut in the middle of the Pampas to feel that it’s folklore. There’s a ton of stuff we do with a weight of tradition behind it that we don’t see. And a lot of it comes from everyday life, from emotion, from the feeling of the people.” 

If up until now the digital folklore scene was almost exclusively a men’s club, Dat Garcia comes in to flip the switch and change the paradigm and make sure women’s voices are heard, telling powerful, profound stories that welcome us to her world of folkfuturist sounds and aesthetics.

Randomized Coffee is a music project created by two Italian DJs, Massimiliano Troiani and Tommaso Checchi. Their sound explores the world of Funk and Brazilian rhythms swinging through Afro-beat and Latin Jazz for the dance-floor. Their previous release, "Agboho" by Randomized Coffee (N'Dinga Gaba remix) topped the Afro House Chart in Traxsource and lasted as number one for a month. On this release, we have "Baba" which is already a Summer anthem for the few DJ's who have the song Worldwide. Steady percussion & vocal chants intertwine with sax & guitar solos keeping the energy up high. "Cidade de Kalimba (Ghost City)" is a long player that goes deep into Afro-House with an organic touch of sax. And as the artists explained to Nickodemus over a coffee, "Hot or cold, sugar or cream, black or shaken, roasted or decaf - from morning till late - the best coffee for your ears is Randomized Coffee!"

Folklore for the Dance Floor 

The latest sonic adventure by King Coya, danceable alter ego of Gaby Kerpel (De La Guarda, Fuerza Bruta) a pioneer of Latin American folklore fused with electronic music, is called “Tierra de King Coya” (Land of King Coya) - a land where rhythms such as the wayno and instruments from the Andes like the ronroco and tarka, are digitally intertwined with the ritual of dance and celebration.  Like a sorcerer from the future, King Coya creates a map of sound exploration navigating the continent through his digital lens. On his 2nd full length album he lays down his own vocals while also plays a smattering of live instruments. 

Since his debut as King Coya with “Cumbias de Villa Donde” (2009) Gaby has produced remixes for artists such as Amadou & Mariam, Brazilian Girls, Julieta Venegas, Luzmila Carpio, Chancha Via Circuito, Tom Tom Club, Petrona Martinez and Magin Díaz amongst others. He also formed part of the band Terraplén (2010) produced by Gustavo Santaolalla and the album “Tira Torito” alongside the coplera Balvina Ramos. 

The journey through the “Land of King Coya” begins with “Te Digo Wayno” a powerful track that highlights the joy of dance, and acts as a poetic introduction to the Queen Cholas, a dance trio that performs with him during live shows. A true ceremony of celebration that integrates the audience into a singular immersive experience. 

The album features diverse guest singers including La Yegros - musical companion from his first shows at Zizek Club and world renown artist for whom he has produced 3 albums - who features on the first single “Algo” (Something) a sort of kuduro mutates into and Andean dub.   For the song  “Tierra de King Coya” a combination of Colombian buyerengue and Argentine carnavalito we find La Walichera’s enchanting voice.  Balvina Ramos collaborates on “Pa que yo Te Cure”  a remix of the song “Linda Flor” (Tira Torito - 2012). Iara Nardi - one of the Queen Cholas - jumps in on the track “Pachamá” with airs of a coplera singer over dancehall beats, reinforcing  the main objective of bringing folklore to the dance floor.  

“Como Saber” (How to know) and “Dorremi” invoke his foundational album “Carnabailito”, (Nonesuch Records 2001) instilling a particular energy to this album that aims to represent the journey in which Gaby Kerpel ultimately becomes King Coya. The end of this road leads to “Icaro Llama Planta”  where Isabel Pinedo Rengifo’,  a healer from the Shipibo community (Peru), contributes with mystical shamanic chants that invite the listener to reconnect with the earth and give closure to this festive ceremony.

While the internet’s universality means once-inaccessible traditional and indigenous styles of music across the planet can be appropriated, sampled, and commodified with ease; it also means they can be integrated and celebrated, reflecting humanity’s idiosyncrasies as well as our shared communality. Montoya, recently signed to ZZK Records, personifies the very best of this musical globalism.

Montoya, who grew up in Colombia and now resides in Italy, entered music as a classically trained violinist. He’s keen to stress his gratitude for this adolescent education, not only in how it exposed whole new worlds of music, but permitted him travel places and sample different cultures from a young age, including playing at such renowned orchestra theaters as Gran Teatro de La Habana in Cuba and the Musikverein in Vienna. This classical upbringing naturally informed his inclusive, and methodically exacting, attitude to songwriting and production.

The pan-international musicality of his Montoya project is rooted in the musical diaspora of his native Colombia. This diaspora is vast; indigenous folk music hailing from Amazonian and Andean tribes; the cosmopolitan synthesis of modern reggaeton and traditional salsa taking place in Bogota and Medellin, and the Afro-Caribbean stylings of Cumbia and Champeta. Fusing the multi-layered precision of his classical education, his innate curiosity for Latin and “world” music, and affection for melodic electronica; his discography is at once ambitious and comfortingly familiar, as desirous of a catchy harmony as conceptual melding of Latin folk and modern electronics.

So far, under the moniker Montoya, he’s produced the stirring 2015 album Iwa and 2016 Ep Lux, where you can detect him refining his cooking skills of the indigenous and the electronic. He’s also remixed the gifted Ecuadorian Nicola Cruz’s pleasantly plodding “Cumbia del Olvido”, adding another layer of melody with a soothing string arrangement. Moreover he’s played Sonar Bogota and Musicbox Lisbon, and various European venues, but his latest album Otun looks set to both break him properly on the continent, and produce his best work so far; a fiery and flavourful gourmet dish, with British expat producer Richard Blair providing refinement as a proverbial sous chef.

On Otun, the breadth of Montoya’s influences and tastes is at its most striking; the dulcet techno hum of “La Pastora” is perforated by sprightly flutes and percussion, while lead single “Solo Quiero” deploys a languid reggaeton pattern beneath Bogota rising star Pedrina’s distorted, wilting croon anticipating a euphoric synthesiser-lead climax. The title track, featuring a sultry guest vocal from Nidia Gongora, is a fierce and vigorous club anthem, amplified by hissing synth pads and sordid breakbeats. Even a more straightforwardly techno track like “Tatacoa” is stylized with intoxicating Indian vocal samples, and more traditional folk selections like “Orun” still use an inobtrusive bassline drone. Montoya’s palette is simultaneously expansive and curious, yet coherent, with a steadily melodic electronic through-line running through Otun’s duration.

Montoya absolutely sustains ZZK’s pedigree of platforming the most exciting and inventive electronic artists from Latin America, joining the storied legacy already built by the likes of Nicola Cruz, Chancha Via Circuito, and King Coya. Whether it’s through the intricate patterns of his synthesisers or the analogue beauty of his violin, what unifies his instrumentation is the candid expression of Montoya’s experiences, ideas and dreams: “I want to feed me of all these emotions, composing and putting into music all that I’ve lived.”
