For the past 15 years the Tanzanian megalopolis of Dar Es Salaam has had one of the most exciting underground electronic music scenes in East Africa. A constellation of micro-scenes from Mchiriku, Sebene and Segere all the way to its latest mutation of Singeli that finally after years of lurking in the underground has exploded into the mainstream and taken over Bongo Flava as the music of choice amongst Tanzania's youth. Born in the sprawling working class neighborhoods of Tandale and Manzese, Singeli's signature sound consists of fast paced frantic loops interlocking with each other, with influences from Zanzibars Tarab music all the way to South African afro-house coupled with mc's who often spit satirical lyrics about the challenges facing Tanzania's youth, from police corruption to the complications of dating girls when you are broke. If there is one studio that stands out amongst the hundreds that dot Dar es Salaam's musical landscape it is SISSO RECORDS. Centered around producers; Bwax, Sisso, Bampa Pana and Yung Keyz Morento and Mc's Dogo Niga and Makavelli, they were early pioneers of the Singeli sound. Whilst some Singeli artists have begun fusing their music with more traditional Tanzanian hip hop, Sisso have remained uncompromising in their sound, always raw, fast with a punk DIY aesthetic that can at times verge on Noise and Gabber, to produce a spell binding music that is like no other Sound System culture in the region.

Jumanne Ramadhani Zegge a.k.a. Bamba Pana is one of the core producers, alongside Jay Mitta and Sisso himself, of the Sisso studio - a central hub for MCs and producers of the Singeli scene in the Mburahati ghetto on the outskirts of Dar Es Salaam. Along with his peers, Bamba Pana uses a laptop and software to update the local, usually acoustic and instrumental style of Singeli, computerizing its hyper rhythms and zinging melodies for the needs of younger, contemporary crowds in an upfront, direct way that has translated far beyond its East African roots.

Following on from releases from Otim Alpha’s retrospective, Gulu City Anthems and Langi Griot Ekuka’s first ever release to the outside world; Nyege Nyege Tapes continues its archeology of Luo sonic culture with this 15 track compilation exploring the birth of Electronic Acholi dance music in Northern Uganda.

The electronic re-interpretation of traditional Acholi courtship songs began in Northern Uganda, primarily in the cities of Gulu and Lira around 2003, when Northern Uganda was still mired in a brutal civil war at huge human cost to the civilian population. This album compiles 15 tracks from the scenes heyday between 2003- 2008 all recorded in various studios in those two cities.

First performed at weddings, they replaced the much larger traditional Larakaraka bands that under war time conditions had become too costly for many newly weds to afford (troupes could consist up to 25 members). Young producers around the time using fruity loops formed recording studios that offered all inclusive packages where they would write a song for a newly wedded couple and then film the wedding and also perform the commissioned song at the ceremony.

Early pioneers of the genre included Leo Palayeng, who founded 2Kleen recording studio, Opiyo Twongweno who still runs the ever active GPS (Glory of God production Studio) and made a successful career as a singer too, Producer Ronnie of Diamond Studio, the late Producer Lumix of Valley Curve Studios, Bosmic Otim, who founded the Sound Beats Studio and North Studio Muze B from Lira.

The sound these producers first made on their computers followed closely the traditional variants that were performed with a range of percussion, calabashes , ankle bells and call and response vocals, but the tempos we sped up with pounding drum machine poly-rhythms in a sort of hypnotic, minimalist delirium.

The sound quickly spread into the local nightclubs around Gulu like the Alobo Night Club and the Opit Travelers inn. To this day, Electro Acholi provides the soundtrack to these cities nightlife in weekly Luo themed nights at clubs such as Pier 2 and Signature club.

This compilation brings together for the first time 15 hard to find classics of the genre featuring some of the most renowned vocalists at the time including Bosmic Otim, Jeff Kornodo, Tabu Busy Body, Zing Zang and City Boy and Otim Alpha. Mastered by Dubplates & Mastering Berlin and presented in a limited edition double clear vinyl edition.

Preview: Electro Acholi Kaboom From Northern Uganda  ' Baby Davlin 'Can Lim'. Releases Sept 12 2019

For this sound piece, I have intervened five recordings from the ‘13 Soundscapes’ release of Biodiversitá Records (https://biodiversitarecords.bandcamp.com/album/13-soundscapes) with a selection of tracks inspired in each field recording. The continuous mix tangled by the different environmental documents is intended to create a sound dialogue between ethereal, digital-conceived music and the organic sensibility of the soundscapes archive.
