An old track of ours remixed, remastered, to take advantage of some knowledge I have acquired over the last few years. Also replayed the piano and added a few things to make the line a little more interesting. Lastly, I changed some bass notes in the hope of pulling it all together better. Like most people, I have heard this song many times, read the poem.
 But now I understand the depth of this poem, so sore and fragile. 
Thank you from heart Debra and Phil,  two wonderful musicians. A JOY.

If you need one poem for regrets in your life, then it must be this poem. 

Down by the Salley Gardens was written by W B Yeats (1889), who is generally known as one of Ireland’s greatest poets.

    Down by the salley gardens my love and I did meet;
    She passed the salley gardens with little snow-white feet.
    She bid me take love easy, as the leaves grow on the tree;
    But I, being young and foolish, with her would not agree.

    In a field by the river my love and I did stand,
    And on my leaning shoulder she laid her snow-white hand.
    She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs;
    But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears.

 Yeats published the poem in his collection, The Wanderings of Oisin and Other Poems in 1889. 
In a note on the poem, he said that he was trying to reconstruct an old song he had heard being sung by a woman in the village of Ballisodare in Sligo.

Down by the Salley Gardens was written as a poem and remained that way until 1909 when Herbert Hughes set it to music using the old Irish melody, The Maids of Mourne Shore.
