Emergency Services Community Wellbeing Programme Rap

Working alongside Sidewalk youth project we asked young people, on outreach, how they beat depression and this is what they said in their words:

Sometimes in our life our depression starts to fall
We can get angry and punch a wall 
But making holes there doesn’t fill our voids
Just a negative way to deal with being annoyed
Trying to keep up with trends drives me round the bend 
But I always feel better hanging out with my friends
Deeper in depression sometimes I’m sinking
So I chill in my bed just lay back thinking
Happiness is wise and so I strive
To mine endorphins by doing exercise
Whether at the gym cycling on swimming
Getting fit makes me feel like I’m winning
Gotta be honest, I cant deny
I sometimes feel better by having a cry
Animals can sometimes lift me up
A hug from my dog lifts me out the muck
It’s Ok if we have to take medication 
Listening to my doctor like a proper patient
Most of us elevate by listening to music
Eminem, Queen, Bowie, sounds we gonna choose it

Sidewalk - Beating Depression

When we are working together we are helping each other
So try not to judge a book by its cover
When you judge me you don’t know what it means
You don’t know what is going on behind the scenes
Sometimes there are feelings on the inside
Sometimes there feels like no place to hide
Don’t get up someone’s sleeves right
Because they sometimes need insight
So much in my head feels like a jungle 
Cant put it together feels like a puzzle
So much going on in my mind
Cant see a solution its like I’m blind
When you keep it inside emotions get worse 
Like a curse if you don’t speak you’ll burst
Let someone in to deal with emotion 
changes commotion, its like a magic potion

Get away from the real world, It’s a safe space
A Place that always welcomes a new face
Every day is different, meeting new people
Learning new things, mind blown, brain freeze lethal
That feeling you get when you are all treated equal 
Its lovely and delicious like apple and treacle
Sometimes in the dark youth clubs a bright light
Shining on everyone our skills burning bright
Everyone is unique in a good way
Funny, resilient, warm unordinary
Warm and welcoming and safe
We are awesome fit and fitter playing sport in this place
So happy like a morning when we are eatin the bacon
Keep giving opportunities cos we will take em
Everyone’s got their own pro and cons
Don’t be the only one turning up in the wrong

We are kids from Burniston Youth Club
Bringing us together to become a hub
We are loving having fun and playing games
No matter your name or background no shame
Meeting new people and making new friends
The family and friendship we make will never end
We’re thankful to our parents who encourage us to come
To the youth club hub we always have fun
