MIDNITE SPARES: COMPILED BY ANDRÁS AND INSTANT PETERSON LP/DIGI OUT 09 SEPT

On Midnite Spares, Australian music devotees András and Instant Peterson hold a candle to overlooked avant-pop and electronic works by antipodean artists and outsiders working through the 80s and 90s. Through co-presenting weekly radio show Strange Holiday, the duo slowly upturned their locale for inspiration - archives, country bookstores, private collections and convenience stores, searching for a place to anchor their own identities in the oceans of the island continent. The 10 tracks acknowledge a minor history, passed on via a network of friends, friends of friends, the libraries of radio station 3RRR and more often than not, the artists themselves.

Renowned mixed media artist Maria Kozic enters with the mysterious downbeat of Trust Me, her partner Philip Brophy responsible for digital and analogue sonic construction. A recurring character in András and Instant Peterson’s investigations, Brophy reappears with a score piece from his divisive feature film Salt, Saliva, Sperm and Sweat, recorded as →↑→ (pronounced “Tch Tch Tch”).

Other links are thread under the surface. Melbourne inner north experimentalist David Chesworth explores his Australiana songcraft leading Whadya Want?. The short lived project also featured Philip Jackson, whose duo The Couch is restored from Fast Forward’s dance issue - a pioneering cassette fanzine published by early-80s 3RRR personality Bruce Milne.

The collection binds a certain musicianship that’s indifferent to fame or chart success, although some artists unwittingly experienced this before and after. Poets of the Machine’s Grace Jones techno-wave was a modest moment for Coral Island and Red Stripe, an English migrant who once celebrated a #1 UK Christmas single with an acapella cover of Yazoo, while the morbid coming of age electronics of Foot and Mouth is a lesser known prologue to Sean Greenway and Matty Whittle’s rise as legendary teen punks heroes God. Quickly becoming a modern dancefloor hit, Mumbo Jumbo’s sole release Wind It Up is only now basking in it’s brilliance.

The remaining figures shape the diversity further. There’s Sydney dub addicts The Igniters, Mix’s groovy synth song about masturbation and the Cameron Allan/Graham Bidstrup soundtrack for petrol headed ozploitation film, Midnite Spares - the compilation’s namesake.

Calypso is the new label from Iñigo Vontier (Mx) and Thomass Jackson (Arg) which will focus on promoting latinamerican artists. With a solid background from both artists releasing on labels like Turbo, Correspondant, Gomma, Her Majestys Ship, My Favorite Robot and many more, Calypso promesses to deliver an inmersion into some of the best artists of the underground latinamerican electronic scene. 
For the first track on the B-Side Thomass Jackson gives us "Fantomas", a creepy funky track that will fit perfectly for Dracula's birthday with dirty vocals and misterious samples. The full release will also come wth tracks from Iñigo Vontier and up-and-coming producers Colossio and Mendrix both hailing from Mexico.
The first 12" will see the light somewhere in the beggining of June.

Phonica Records Special Editions in association with Play It Again Sam is delighted to present the incredible Quiet Village remix of Agnes Obel’s ‘Stretch Your Eyes’, lifted from the Danish born, Berlin based singer songwriter’s critically acclaimed 3rd studio album ‘Citizen of Glass’.

Obel was at an early age guided into music by the influence of her parents, who would play and listen to a blend of the classical greats, folk music and contemporary pop. She learnt to play piano as a child but it was her move to Berlin in 2006 that prompted her to take her music to the next level. Her debut Philharmonics was released in 2010, a quiet phenomenon that spent seven consecutive weeks at number 1 and sold in excess of 100,000 copies in her homeland alone. The release of ‘Aventine’ in 2013 cemented her status as a household name across Europe and as an icon to piano players throughout the world.

Quiet Village are the British duo of long-time record-collector and DJ Joel Martin and Matt Edwards, the house and techno producer known as Radio Slave and the head of the Rekids label. They came to our attention with a series of highly sought after twelves on the DJ Harvey-related Whatever We Want label from New York, alongside excellent remixes of The Osmonds, Toby Tobias, Black Devil Disco Club and Francois K before releasing their acclaimed album on K7 Records in 2008. After a break from using the Quite Village name, the duo are back with a bang and recently graced the Phonica White label with a fantastic techno 12” ‘Social Music’ / ‘Change’.

Needless to say, Quiet Village were the first producers Phonica thought of when looking for remixes for this project and their slow, dark, dub-heavy atmospheric groove perfectly compliments Agnes’s vocal, with echoes of Massive Attack’s timeless ‘Teardrops’ coming to mind. It’s one of the finest remixes we’ve heard in recent memory and we’re proud to present it as a limited 12” on the Special Editions label.

Super Liminal is the LP that catapulted the afro-latin electronic band Penya into the spotlight at the end of last year. The group, comprised of Magnus Mehta, Lilli Elina, Jim Le Messurier and Viva Msimang, have been highlighted by many of the industry's top names including Gilles Peterson, Bonobo and Mr. Bongo, among others. We tip our hat to Pete from On The Corner Records for his exquisite A&R skills in discovering the band and also for gathering together the producers that have contributed to the follow-up remix package.

Photay is the first name to grace the Super Liminal Remixed EP and the Cham Bomb remix is our premiere today. Keeping the structure but pitching up the tempo of the original, stripping away the impactful percussion and adding hypnotizing horns that twist and turn about the crescendoing piece, the prolific producer turns this one into a dark and raw piece that'll fuel any late night dancefloor.

Next up on the A side is Sarathy Korwar's remix of Why So Angry, a driving and spellbinding piece not so unlike Photay's remix, with added horns and darker atmosphere, utilizing the entrancing vocals of Lilli to their full potential. Closing out the first side of the record is Dengue Dengue Dengue's tropical rework of Search it Out, complete with added flutes and an upbeat bouncy marimba rhythm.

Opening up the B side (really the AA1 because all of the remixes are just that good) is Daisho's remix of Iyesa, a fairly stripped back version with chopped vocals, kalimba thumbings and textured atmospheres developing towards the latter half. The final remix in the package comes from Al Zanders, who turns the original of Tribes on its head into a bubbly dancefloor piece with a new bassline and warm electric piano noodling.

Overall, this remix EP is an extremely strong package, the likes of which we haven't seen in quite a while. All the producers that were brought together are prolific musicians and managed to keep the essence of Penya's originals but added their own distinct flavours to their respective remixes. Expect to hear these all for quite some time.
