Roe Deers presents his fascinating debut full-length Salt Town Boy, a leftfield collection of wild sonic tales filled with dusky moods and punk attitude. The first LP to be released on Good Skills, the label Roe Deers runs with BDHBTS co-conspirator Titas Motuzas, the album brings together tracks produced in his Vilnius studio over the past six years. It also features a series of unique storytelling vocal contributions from an international list of friends and colleagues.
Roe Deers is a Lithuanian-based project led by Liudas Lazauskas. A regular at Vilnius institution Opium and a key member of the city’s fertile scene, he’s long been breaking the rules of genre in his explorations of the uncharted territories of murky electronic music, releasing on labels like Omnidisc, Turbo, Nein Records and Throne Of Blood.
The Salt Town of the album’s title is Druskininkai, the Lithuanian spa resort where Roe Deers grew up and first began DJing at a venue run by his parents. The breadth of styles and moods he was exposed to from an early age can be heard across these 12 intriguing tracks, which blend elements of beat science, electroclash, post punk, italo, krautrock and EBM into a deliciously intoxicating brew.
The skewed motorik pulse of opener and lead single ‘Trident’, featuring apocalyptic intonations by French-Canadian lyricist C.A.R., sets an offbeat, ominous tone that prevails for the rest of the album. Vocal contributions from Israeli producer Niv Ast (‘Late Night Tale’), Norwegian troublemaker Sex Judas (‘Rodeo King’) and Berlin-based singer Aquarius Heaven (‘Walking Down The Streets’) each bring out the moods – vampish, febrile, industrial – that permeate Roe Deers’s textured, percussive productions. At the album’s centre are two tracks that point to the past and possible future of the Roe Deers project: first, ‘Thème’ features French post punk band Order89 in a compelling disco-noir moment that recalls his earlier club EPs; then, regular collaborator Palmės Žiedas provides Lithuanian vocals for ‘Tarp Raudonų Šviesų’ (‘Between Red Lights’), a frenzied howl of a track that fits an entire film score into its short three minutes.
The instrumental pieces on the album have their own stories to tell, from the dusty dive bar meditation of ‘Flying Carpets’ to the paranoid proto-techno pulse of ‘Celebrity Theme’ and the 11-minute cyclical epic ‘Never - Ending -’. As the last moments of cinematic closer ‘Fin’ play out, we realise that our trip down the twisted paths of Roe Deers’s beguiling sound world is coming to an end; but we also know that to go back in again all we have to do is press play.
Roe Deers will be launching the Salt Town Boy LP with a live performance and DJ set in Vilnius. The album will be followed by a remixes EP.

Exclusive: Pete 'Padre' Lazonby - Beautiful Lies

No stranger to sumptuous electronic vibes, Pete Lazonby dons his Padre hat for the 31st release on RAWAX, a label which continues to push forward from strength to strength. The Beautiful Lies EP brings to the fore a quadruple-headed trip-vibe for the DJs of the world.

For the A-side, we're given two superb originals in the name of Beautiful Lies and Spellcasting, two cuts of absolute class in every way. The title track is a heady mixture of softly crisp hats, neatly placed FX sounds and light, yet punchy, percussion. The synths weave in and around the bass and drums, ethereal in their warmth and space-like flow. A good word to describe the sound would be 'woozy', as there's a real hazy-headed feeling to the vibe here. 

Following on is the aforementioned Spellcasting, sticking with a similarly spaced-out theme, but this time utilising more of a minimal approach, as the track takes several minutes to build from its synth-led start, the layers of drums, tinkling riffs, additional fuzzy synths and low-buzzing FX sounds all gradually settling down in their rightful place, within the sound spectrum. As electronic music goes, you'll have to go some way to create something as gorgeous as this, it's perfect warm-up or ending-set music, but that you can also listen to as a standalone piece of beautiful music. 

The B-side takes the two A-side tracks and gives each one of them a Beat Mix; what this essentially means is you get slightly more stripped-back versions of both cuts, which are in reference to, but add excellent bonuses to, the originals themselves. Not DJ tools as such, each version just takes some of the elements out, or they are simply rearranged, both working wonderfully. The Beat Mix of Spellcasting is a quite exquisite example of how to make something have a real impact, but in a quiet and understated manner, again a showcase of absolute skill to close this excellent release. The level of soothing on this EP is really something else!

The new 10 inch SuperSingle 160 by O*RS takes us back on a journey through time without suffering a loss of modern or contemporary sound. With "BodyTalk" the Berlin based female producer PEREL creates a future house classic featuring no less than Abba Lang. Lang, who lives in Berlin but originally comes from Uganda, not only ads his voice to the original track but creates a delicate Hip Hop rhythm while reciting - and harmonizes perfectly with PERELs vocals and the sound of the track. "This Love", the second track featured on the limited SuperSingle is a House tune which has it all: love for detail, funky grooves and extravaganza. O*RS 10inch 160 - one record, five tracks and a perfect fusion of House and Hip Hop.
The black gold will also be available in digital form. Besides the two original tracks O*RS offers two fantastic remixes as well as a dub version of "Body Talk" as a digital bonus. The "Dubson Booty Remix" teases out the sound of the 90s and pushes "Body Talk" skillfully into 2014. Nico Bulla's interpretation is fresh and different. The lowered baseline add another dimension to the original track and so creates a unique character of sound. How could it be different, the dub version perfectly enraptures the sound of the original. It emphasizes all the Hip Hop elements in a typical dub manner and produces a first class symbiosis of House and Hip Hop. Road To Yuzu

Road To Yuzu originates from a long drive to the east of Holland. I was on my way to a place called Yuzu after a long day in the studio, where I was stuck in an old flow and sound. I found myself re-evaluating this flow and it felt like I was ready for something new. This drive somewhat changed the sound I wanted to focus on, giving me new energy and inspiration. Road to Yuzu, a melancholic driven breakbeat track, represents this turning point. 


Phasing In

The acid elements characterize the over-rushed society we live in, where we forget to stand still at times. The kalimba percussion and synthesizers represents the opposite; feeling grounded and conscious. With Phasing in, I tried to combine these feelings to express the contradiction of the two.


Anxious World

The last track of the EP starts with dreamy synths slowly evolving into a heavy leading bass with breakbeat elements. The short didgeridoo cuts and the use of the old Yamaha SY22 synthesizer rounded up the track.


Alteration EP 

With the three tracks taken together I tried to give an output on all different thoughts going on in the studio while making music. I’m always in search to keep the balance between dancefloor movement and calmness. It’s a process where everything is subject to change and alteration.

Exclusive: Abrão - Intensidade (Rina Remix)

Combining darkness and happiness in his music Tel Aviv-based artist Rina has left his footprints in the blossoming nightlife scene of his country and beyond, always having an ear for aspiring, local or renowned artists. Maybe the latter is his key to success or the reason why Asaf, Rina’s real name, has been a scene’s mainstay, or maybe it’s his unagitated way how to deal and approach music that made him win the laurels. However, Rina’s got something (fried) cooking - musically - that is on his way from the dark underground to daylight. So Asaf took on intense remix duties for Abrão’s track Intensidade - so basically one project of his remixes another one he’s involved with - on Frank Wiedemann’s Bigamo Musik imprint. Shortly before the release Asaf spoke to Torture the Artist, not only about the remix and his relationship to music but also about falafel. the underground, balancing things out, his Jazz-band and Suppe Bekifft.
