Immersed in the essence of Drum 'n' Bass, Sebastian Gawlik, the New Zealand-based producer known as Obeisant injects his trailblazing energy into the genre. His unique sound is characterized by breakbeats, a dark atmosphere, funk, and a primal urgency, drawing inspiration from the attitude of Hip-Hop and Punk. Obeisant seamlessly navigates the balance between nostalgia and contemporary futurism, creating the distinct sonic identity that is Obeisant.
Influenced by luminaries such as Dillinja, Total Science, Konflict, Bad Company, and Ed Rush and Optical in the realm of Drum 'n' Bass, Obeisant's musical palette extends beyond the genre. His influences encompass Tool, Seattle Grunge, and hard rock, along with 90s/2000s Hip-Hop from Outkast, gangster-rap, conscious rap, and electronica artists like Chemical Brothers, Basement Jaxx, and The Prodigy, preceding his deep dive into Drum 'n' Bass.
In 2016, Obeisant made his debut under the esteemed label Critical Music, with Kasra providing a home for his inaugural EP on the Binary series. The journey began with early support from influential figures like Skynet, Resound, Lockjaw, and John Rolodex.
Rene LaVice showcased Obeisant's monumental Jungle track 'Adore You,' released on Locked Concept, during a dedicated artist spotlight on his BBC Radio 1xtra show.
Obeisant's musical exploration is a continuous evolution, as he eloquently puts it, "...exploring basic ideas, taking unexpected turns, and consistently refining my sound palette, paying homage to the influences I cherish—it's an ongoing journey." His diverse discography spans labels such as Critical, Program, Machinist Music, Locked Concept, Lifestyle, and T3K.
Collaborating and releasing music with Resound, John Rolodex, Lockjaw, and New Zealand-based Victim, Obeisant brings a collaborative spirit to his artistic journey.
