Modular Madness harnesses ominous flavors and a driving baseline that ebbs & flows to keep minds melting. The melodies open into swirling synthetics, with revolving reverberations and rich soundscapes capturing the ear from start to finish. The B-side is brimming quick breaks built with dance floor moments in mind. A true techno tool for the selectors amongst us.

Storied German duo Extrawelt arrive at Obscura on remix duty, taking the reins on Riot Dance to twist a low-slung groover. They bring the baseline into the foreground, keeping a delightful vibe alive and welcoming a touch of light to the dark underbelly of the original, before diving back into the deep as the track unfolds. 

Obscura regular Mathew Jonson connects with a producer he knows quite well - his brother Nathan. Together, they remix Modular Madness under their alias Midnight Operator. Picking up the pace, they maintain the acid-laced grit from the original Fedele arrangement, while adding serene melodies to the high-end. A balanced rework from two seasoned veterans.

Fedele first discovered the original version of ‘Burn Like Fire’ on Xx Isis xX’s Facebook page. It’s a deeply personal, self-produced synth-pop track - which Isis had posted on the internet to see how people would react. The song struck a chord with Fedele, inspiring him to ask her if he could remix and release it on his label. She agreed and he proceeded to give it his signature chugging electro treatment, turning it into a euphoric club weapon.

Obscura, the Italian based imprint run by Agents Of Time, present their second release featuring new tracks by a variety of artists including François X, Voiski and The Hacker.

Label owners offer a disorienting line of acid tension in ‘Sequences’ followed by minimalist master Voiski’s ‘Floodlight For Sunflower’ - a deep end percussive workout. Parisian underground export François X is next with stripped back hypnotic roller ‘Rigid Monitor’ whilst The Hacker explores face-melting electro on ‘Analog Blizzard’.

Conceptual Spanish producer Orbe pairs interplanetary glitches with low end bass structures on ‘Temporary Mutation’ followed by Warsaw based Frenchman Amandra, who delves into droning tribal percussions on ‘Derviche Roba’.

Abstract Division, the collaborative project by Paul Boex and Dave Miller offer an eerie, energetic builder on ‘Unfolding Process’, followed by British techno mainstay Roberto’s funk injected robotic workout ‘Talisman’.

Ahrpe Records co-founder Amandra navigates a unique space between droning ambience and polyrhythmic funk on ‘Dame De Bahia’, his first release to emerge on Italian imprint Obscura. This is the French, Warsaw-based producer’s second album and follows a string of acclaimed EPs on Ahrpe, Semantica Tikita and Silent Season.

Complex patterns are woven through sustained tone clusters to foster an unlimited sense of energy and focus. Radiant synths glisten over live percussive loops whilst infinite pads wander the boundaries of light and dark.

Amandra uses minimalist techniques to build tranquil sonic spaces that evolve on their own accord, making way for carefully mapped out rhythmic cycles. The result is an immersive listening experience replete with subtle details, but never cluttered.

Agents Of Time are proud to present ‘Ordinary Cosmic Dance’, the new EP on their own Obscura imprint. Over three tracks the Bari based trio brandish hypnotic, looping melodies in techno structures with subtle trance references. It arrives a year after the birth of the label, which has since issued music by Hiver, Amandra and The Hacker amongst others.

‘Ordinary Chaos’ builds low end frequencies juxtaposed with a stripped back melodic lead and staccato bass. ‘Cosmic Frequencies’ revolves around a syncopated synth line that swells its way through mesmeric percussion and entrancing pads. ‘Dance Impulse’ takes fragments of dub techno and remoulds them into a glitchy dancefloor workout.

Following the release of Amandra's acclaimed Dame de Bahia album last year, Obscura present a remix EP due 14th September. Featured in the package - which will be available as both vinyl and digital - are remixes from ROD, Antigone, Agents of Time and Kris Wadsworth.

Dame De Bahia, Amandra’s second studio album, navigates a unique space between droning ambience and polyrhythmic funk. Using minimalist techniques, the Ahrpe Records co-founder builds tranquil sonic spaces that evolve on their own accord, making way for carefully mapped out rhythmic cycles. The result is an immersive listening experience replete with subtle details, but never cluttered.

For the remix package, five interpretations provide varying takes on Amandra’s originals. Agents Of Time build a swirl of trance-inducing synths on their remix of the title track, followed by a darkened dose of trippy techno on ROD’s first remix of ‘Pimprenelle’.

Opening up the B side, Kris Wadsworth creates a cavernous setting for his eerie take on ‘Polichinela’, whilst Antigone’s interpretation of ‘Linale’ veers us into warmer, ambient territory.

As part of the digital release only, ROD provides a second version of ‘Pimprenelle’, navigating a hypnotic journey through minimalist structures.

[OBSM006] A1. Amandra - Dame De Bahia (Agents Of Time Remix)

For its seventh release, Obscura - the thriving label of Italian trio Agents Of Time - returns to the compilation format to welcome exciting new talents and core label acts. 

‘East Coast’, the Agents Of Time track which opens the release, is at once tough and atmospheric, with delicate pads suspended above the rugged, syncopated rhythm. London Modular Alliance complete the A-side with an organic jam of bleeps, bass and crisp percussion. Next, Australian Jensen Interceptor contributes a fresh cut of rapid-fire electro which leads neatly into the sci-fi tones of ‘Welcome To My World’ by newcomer Golden Virgo. 

Following a full EP on Obscura earlier this year, Hiver is back with the elastic bassline and dreamy arpeggios of ‘Stasys’. Orbe, a remixer on Hiver’s EP, impresses with ‘Never Comes’, a similarly restrained and endlessly detailed journey through the depths. 

The final side is split between Laguna and Kris Wadsworth. The former tunnels further into the hypnotic side of Obscura’s sound whilst Wadsworth’s crunchy, Detroit techno ends the release on a high. With ‘From Sound To Silence 2’, Agents Of Time have compiled eight, stand-out tracks to explore the full range of their dancefloor sensibilities.

Mathew Jonson and Agents Of Time take their on-stage collaboration into the studio for a new EP on Obscura, ‘Repeating Pattern, Numbers and Letters’.
Italian trio Agents Of Time realise a longtime dream with the eighth release on their Obscura label. Mathew Jonson’s singular productions and improvisational performance style has had a huge influence over them since the beginning of their career, so much so that their name Agents Of Time is taken from a 2010, Mathew Jonson album title. Their shared love for jamming and aligned musical visions led to a joint performance in 2017 (Agents Of Time played live with Jonson’s band Cobblestone Jazz) and now it lands on record.

Press play on opener ‘Repeating Patterns, Numbers and Letters’, which features the infectious vocals of Jonson’s wife Isis, and the spirited vibe of those sessions comes alive. The beats are organic, the melodies warm and colourful. Jonson’s inimitable splashes of funk and the Agents’ fluid basslines continue on the B-side with the kaleidoscopic breakdowns of ‘IG00156’. The digital only, final track ‘Dancing In The Darkness’ is another extended trip through the four artists’ rich world of sound, rounding off this inimitable record with striking musicianship.
