Presenting their third offering of 2021, Roger Martinez’s Higher States welcomes Abity to the label for their debut EP. Hailing from Argentina, Jóse Duque and Bruno Signorelli make up the Abity production team. The Rosario natives have been collaborating and creating their brand of progressive music for over a decade. Laying claim to a discography of close to 150 credits, the Nick Warren favourites have showcased their music via Antrim's Or Two Strangers, 3rd Avenue, Soundteller Records and Stellar Fountain. Following a release for Nikko.Z’s Dopamine White, Abity now makes their much-anticipated Higher States debut with ‘Hollow’. 

As Abity approaches their thirteenth year together, the duo’s creative synergy continues to flourish with ‘Hollow’. Typically impressive, the seven-minute journey is one of power and hypnosis, characterized by a muscular groove, charming effects and breezy atmospheric swells. A forest of neatly manicured percussion adds to the glorious progression, as vocal overlays bring further depth at timely moments leading to the break. Tranquil arps highlight the centrepiece, bringing meditative qualities to further saturate your senses, onwards to a thumping finale. 

The companion piece ‘Particles’ is equally impressive with its infectious drive and otherworldly atmospheres. Warm and full, it’s voluptuous groove and rhythmic pulses are transcendent, building momentum as interwoven effects delight with their mystical charm. A magnificent break sits at the heart of the journey, highlighted by glassy arps and muted beats, eventually melting down to a rousing drum roll and suitably hypnotic finale. It rounds out an exceptional Higher States debut for Abity, an artist duo who continues to impress with their heady creations. Highly recommended.

UK-based producer Tommy Farrow remixes Grum and Sarah Appel’s ‘Come Alive’.

One of dance music’s brightest upcoming talents, Tommy Farrow counts Sam Divine, Jess Bays and Diplo amongst his fans, and recently supported Hot Since 82 at Manchester’s Warehouse Project. He’s since released on Stress Records, Shall Not Fade and Armada Electronic Elements, and recently signed to Sony Publishing. Farrow’s releases tread the line between breakbeat and trance, and he expertly combines the two with his ‘Come Alive’ remix. 

‘Come Alive’ was originally released on Grum's latest studio album 'Unreality' in June 2022. ‘Unreality’ is his most reflective work to date, putting human connection in the digital age under the microscope. A story in two halves, the album is introspective, ideas-driven and song-heavy, holding a mirror to Graeme’s own emotional journey over the last two years.

Tommy Farrow says: “I wanted this remix to be a big room club record with a driving bassline and a bright trance-like lead - Sarah's vocals in particular were amazing to work with. I’m so excited to release this remix with Anjuna, they have an amazing following and the label is home to some of my favourite artists. I’m also a massive fan of Grum’s work, so I’m really excited to get this one out!”

Clocking back in on Stil vor Talent, here goes Cioz with his newest delivery, 'These Accordi'. Taking its name from the Italian word for 'agreement' - which also stands for 'chords', the idea for the track actually came about when Alessandro's attention was caught by the sound of an asphalt paver in the street. He then sampled it and processed it to produce the bassline, which he says was "full of character and texture". On the conceptual side, Cioz explains the track aims to explore the balance between the notions of agreement and disagreement, an enslaving loop one needs to break out from to find this actual state of balance.

The metronomic tension that animates 'These Accordi' throughout has the pendulum swinging sharp and clean, from proper jacking techno patterns to lithe EBM-ish bass music, onto liquid house hypnotism in the home stretch. Deftly shifting gears, from robotic jack to more organic layers and folds, Cioz has us traversing a wealth of moodscapes in one bumpy, elating jaunt. A further jagged and wonky number, 'Move On' treats us to a mix of heavily processed '80s style guitar riffs and stealth bass assault, echoing the dissonant pulse of 'Accordi' through a collage of static-filled wobbles, radical syncopations and FX-strewn solos to better explore the emancipatory nature of Cioz' lead theme: looping our way out of the girdling status quo.
