According to Dr. William Waring’s journals from the time, yellow fever was responsible for a 70% drop in the population of Savannah, Georgia between 1807 and 1820. In 1820 alone, around 700 people perished from the disease. The yellow fever left a legacy of suffering in Savannah that includes mass graves, creepy hospitals, and spooky spanish moss. In Bonus Episode 2, Alli and I discuss the restless spirits of Savannah.

North Brother Island sits in the east river between Rikers and the bronx, a beautiful and haunting abandoned landscape being used as a bird sanctuary. In 1885, however, it housed more than beautiful birds. North Brother Island was home to a hospital for infectious diseases. It was also home to the infamous Mary Mallon, otherwise known as Typhoid Mary. 

On this week’s episode, we discuss the infectious Ms. Mallon, typhoid fever, and the haunting of North Brother Island.

High on a hill overlooking the swampy streets of Louisville, KY sits a piece of history. The infamous tuberculosis sanatorium dubbed Waverly Hills, most haunted hospital in the United States. 

Waverly Hills was built on the idea that fresh air and positive thinking could cure those suffering from one of the worst diseases of the early 20th century. Unfortunately, not every patient thrived on good vibes alone. Many people died in the self-contained community of Waverly Hills. Some died of tuberculosis. Some died from the unfounded, invasive treatments. Others simply gave in to despair. 

All that tragedy still haunts the halls of this beautiful, historical building today.
