In a world where everyone with a computer equipped with Garageband or Logic or, dare I say, FruityLoops, thinks he or she is a producer or an artist of some sort. In the same way that the Beatles and the Kinks inspired everyone to go buy a guitar and plug in to the outlets in their garages in hopes that they too would be on the radio in no time. You have to respect their fervor and drive, and their ability to dream. But dreaming a bit never got a check signed by a big a label or plays on the airwaves. Still, the internet seems to be the world’s stage. You want an audience? Post it on Facebook or Twitter or Vimio or Soundcloud and anyone can click on it and listen to these musical (ahem) gems. 

That’s where Arie Dixon comes in. The Rapper, Singer, Producer, and 1/2 of O.C.A.D. Arie is dabbling in hip-hop, soul, funk, and even reggae. At some point his music defies genres and labels, and it becomes just good music. Like Stevie Wonder or Prince, Arie melds these genres into a choice musical offering that defy categories. In his newest project ‘The Jack Move (vol 5),’ Arie takes an already finished track and polishes it. Today’s industry is defined by polishing and production and turning something that was already good it to something that is theoretically better. But equally important as to where the polishing begins it is where the polishing ends. Arie has become adept at doing just enough to transform a song, making it his own, and not going overboard. 

The original track, ‘No Type,’ by Rae Sremmurd tells us that the aforementioned artist ‘don’t got no type, bad bitches be the 
only thing that I like.’ Arie’s version tells us that ‘defining someone’s life by defining what they like is a little bit weird.’ And it seems to be right on. But that’s the difference between industry trap and the ‘trap of the industry.’ But we shouldn’t ask, ‘what do I have that makes me cool?’ Instead we should be asking, ‘what questions do I ask?’ And by doing so Arie is saying, ‘this is what I think, and this is what makes me cool.’ But that’s the difference between music that we listen to a few times and discard for something newer, but is by no means different. Arie says, ‘this is why it’s cool, take it or leave it;’ but this is this music that will stand the test-of-time, while the others will lie in a used CD bin fading into obscurity.

Arie Dixon - "No Type" (The Jack Move 5) | Rae Sremmurd

Arie Dixon is serving up more on his ‘Jacked’ album. Who was ‘got’ this week? England’s own Kooks were the victims. Their song, ‘Sweet Emotion,’ was the funky groove held up at gun point and taken to better horizons. The original song is a good one; it might be about as funky as four white boys from East Sussex, England can get. Arie’s take is funkier; melding sounds like Michael Jackson and CeeLo Green with straight ahead hip-hop like the Roots. Somehow Arie’s version sounds more organic, which seems counterintuitive because it was a remix of a song that was not his to begin with. I am reminded of Eddie Hazel’s version of the Beatles, ‘I Want You(She’s so Heavy).’ No one will deny the merits of the original; I mean it is the Beatles for god’s sake. But Eddie Hazel, with Bootsie Collins in-tow, took it to much funkier heights. It’s as if they sanded down the edges and coated it with something viscous—in similar fashion, Arie has taken something good and altered it slightly. And though his version of ‘Sweet Emotion’ is more complex, it seems far easier to digest.
