It is a series of performances by Pauline Cummins and Frances Mezzetti, begun in 2009, where the artists appear as men and represents a decade long collaboration between the artists. It is a timely showcase of contemporary thinking on gender issues and challenges the perceptions of what is culturally viewed as normal public realm negotiations from a gendered stance.

Women throughout their lives experience vulnerability in public space, have a sense of not belonging, with the implication of impropriety or deviant sexuality for walking alone on a street – a fact once again all too close to the bone with recent tragic events. What began, a decade ago as a project that informed the artists’ themselves about the different ways in which men and women occupy space, has grown into an exploration of different cultural assumptions about the right of ownership of the spaces of our daily lives, whether in Northern or Southern Ireland, England, Scotland, Spain or Turkey.

Trail Blazing Secretary General in Ireland's Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment
Dr Orlaigh Quinn is one of a rare breed. She rose through the Irish Civil Service to become the Secretary General of the government’s Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment in Ireland.  There have only ever been 13 women to reach this position. What is even more impressive is that she was a trail blazer with few women role models. The reason there were so few women in senior leadership ranks was in no small way due to the fact that the Marriage Bar was in place in Ireland. This rule meant that when a woman got married, she was barred from her job and had to resign her position in the public service. In return she received a marriage gratuity -a decent sum of money at the time -the idea was to compensate her for surrendering her job and future prospects.

“The Marriage Bar was also in other countries, the Netherlands UK and America had it” she tells us in the podcast, “but they actually abolished it in the 1950s. Ireland had it until 1973. It applied to the civil service but it also applied to quite a lot of other areas in the private sector, the banks, they just took the lead from us.”

They are something being generated by you.
No feeling is final. It’s very important to know, however bad you feel right now. Let’s engage in some coping mechanisms. Let’s spend some time with friends and nature with your family even watching a movie to zone out. That’s perfectly good, too. So no feeling is final.
I am not thriving despite what happened to me, I am thriving because of what happened to me. There’s nothing more empowering than surviving. I see life differently now, because I was broken. That brokenness allowed me to see differently, which is beautiful.

Catherine Guy is the only woman to head up one of Ireland’s Top Ten law firms. ByrneWallace has almost 50:50 female to male ratio though all its leadership teams and Catherine believes that this has been good for business on so many levels. “The mixture and the interaction between men and women is just so beneficial to a business, so beneficial to decision making, so beneficial to proper and challenging debate that actually gets you to the right decisions at the end of the day.” Her advice to young women with ambition to succeed in their careers is twofold. First is from the book title ‘Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway‘. “When you are looking at a piece of work that you have a blank spot about,  maybe a difficult conversation with a client or  with a colleague, I think you have to take a deep breath and go in and do it anyway.” The second is from her grandmother who used to say “you will never learn younger” that is do the thing now. “It is about feeling the fear factor, acknowledging the challenge and getting stuck in and doing it notwithstanding”

She has noticed that companies are now realising how valuable it is to have women represented on their senior management teams and on boards.

“We are now working with organisations who feel having a female presence on the board can increase profitability and will reach out to a full audience. From a business perspective, to turn your back on 51% of the population does not make sense for anybody so absolutely at the top table it has been refreshing to see the warmer welcome for the female.”

Nominated for a New York Radio Award 'Mrs Findlay's Broadwood Square Piano' is a haunting love story that is revealed through the restoration of a piano. As the piano is lovingly restored from a bag of bones, so too is the love story from the pages of history and a long lost Sonata is unearthed in the process and given new life by concert pianist Inja Davidovic.
Bought in 1977 on a whim for fifty pounds in Ballycastle, Mrs. Findlay’s Broadwood Square Piano, a bockedy old instrument, unearths a story of forbidden romance in Glasgow between heiress Dorothea Findlay and John Donaldson her piano teacher, a legal battle over a dowry and the reunification of two families. As its strings and pedals are restored by Michael Hannon, so too is the history of a family and airing of a sonata by Donaldson inspired by Dorothea, that had lain dormant for years.

Donaldson’s several musical compositions for the piano were inspired by his romance with Dorothea whom he finally married without a dowry in 1820. His Sonata for the Piano Forte in G Major was published by Muzio Clementi Esq in 1822 and supposedly charts his romantic journey and love for his wife  ‘the flighty Dorothea’. He later studied law and spent decades in courts claiming her portion of her family inheritance.
