Dyme-A-Duzin is a former member of the band known as Phony Ppl. Between 2008 and 2013, they performed with popular acts such as Erykah Badu, The Roots and Talib Kweli. Derrick Gardner is back with the Big dig! Band and their premiere release, Still I Rise.  The seven-track masterpiece (ten on the digital copy) is a combination of Derrick’s small group, The Jazz Prophets, with current and former students/colleagues from the U.S. and Canada coming together to form an 18 piece big band.  Striving to set a new standard in the Winnipeg area, where Derrick teaches, the band has workshopped the music in the spirit of the Mingus big band perfecting it into the well-oiled machine that we hear on this recording.

Dion Tucker is one of the premiere trombonists on the jazz scene today having played with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, the Harry Connick Jr. Big Band, Steve Turre, he’s been on Broadway and much more.  With such an accomplished career at such a young age, it is hard to imagine that it was almost cut short, but that’s exactly what happened last year.  Dion was diagnosed with embouchure dystonia, which is a type of focal dystonia.  But rather than get down about the cards he was dealt he decided to take the experience and turn it into something positive.  Darryl Yokley had the chance to catch up with him to talk about his journey through adversity, musician’s health, and much more.

Celebrating its second anniversary, the show has carved its niche as a go-to source for interviews with key newsmakers and influencers. In depth discussion of topics across a variety of fields, including politics, education, health, entertainment, sports, African American issues and culture has been at the forefront of the RolandMartinUnfiltered mission since day one. When breaking news happens or big shifts in the culture occur, Martin has been there to document, explain and highlight those aspects of the story that most impact the African American community.  Sadly, when black cultural icons have departed this life, such as Chadwick Boseman, Kobe Bryant, Congressman John Lewis, Earl Graves, Rev. C.T. Vivian, Rev. Joseph Lowery, Leah Chase and Bill Withers, RolandMartinUnfiltered has drawn attention to their passage and honored their contributions to American society.  Occhi Magazine caught up with Roland and discussed current issues and the direction of his daily digital show.

Occhi was born in the early 2000’s!  Under the creative stewardship of Tiffany Unscripted, it started as a hybrid digital magazine, releasing new features and sections with a focus on creative people.
