Today marks what would have been the Guv'nor's 60th birthday.

As a little nod to the late great Andrew Weatherall we've re-sharing an old mix of his alongside Sean Johnston, recorded in the lead up to Electric Elephant 11 years ago, which was only previously available on Mixcloud.

This came just a year into the duo's journey as ALFOS and their now infamous project which Andrew described as “an oasis of slowness in a world of increasing velocity”.

It is not everyday we are sent a 5 hour mix from someone we have asked to join our Phonica mix series; but when Sheffield & Manchester legend Luke Una sends one… you have to jump straight into it! Having become first recognised in the late 80’s and 90’s as one half of production team “The Unabombers” with Justin Crawford, Luke over the years has shown to be a master in all genres be it Balearic, to Brazilian to E soul, House, Disco and Techno, you name it! With his Worldwide FM show over the years gaining a cult following Luke has gained an even more of a broader crowd from his curation of his E Soul Cultura compilation series via the label Mr.Bongo (Both comps topping our EOY lists in 2022 and 2023). This exact vast taste (that is displayed in these compilations) is very much pummelled into this five hour journey of a mix like a piece of clay and sculpted into a fine piece of art. For October’s edition of Carhartt WIP Radio, we’re welcoming London producer and songwriter Nathan Jenkins, also known as Bullion (@bullionness). 

Bullion made his debut in 2007 with the release of “Pet Sounds: In the Key of Dee,” a mashup project that remixed the music of J Dilla with The Beach Boys. Evolving this sample-led approach, he released the project “You Drive Me to Plastic” in 2011, composed of samples taken from YouTube clips, old vinyls, and incidental recordings.

A string of releases followed across labels including Honest Jon’s, R&S, and Young, before Bullion launched his own imprint DEEK Recordings in 2012, with the release of his 80s-pop-tinged EP “Love Me Oh Please Love Me.”

Alongside his prolific solo projects, Bullion often works with other artists, with credits ranging from Nilüfer Yanya and Sampha to Avalon Emerson and Ben Howard. Bullion’s latest album, “Affection,” highlights this collaborative aspect, featuring contributions from Carly Rae Jepsen, Panda Bear, and Charlotte Adigéry.

For this Carhartt WIP Radio episode, Bullion has created a mix featuring a vibrant blend of his solo work, as well as production for other musicians, and select remixes. 

Alongside the mix is an interview where Bullion discusses the influence of an early Pet Shop Boys album, the art of collaborating with other musicians, and his thoughts on technology’s effect on music. Read the talk via www.carhartt-wip.com/journal/music

To close out the year, we’re bringing you a very special Carhartt WIP Radio episode featuring none other than Alan Daniel Maman – better known as @thealchemistofficial

A globally-renowned producer and DJ, celebrated for his significant contributions to hip hop, Alchemist grew up in the Westside of LA, immersed in skateboarding, graffiti, and music.

Alchemist started out as a rapper in the early 90s in the duo The Whooliganz, but his breakthrough as a producer came later in the decade, making beats for Dilated Peoples and Mobb Deep. By the early 2000s, Alchemist had risen to prominence with his signature sample-based production, which blended elements of jazz, soul, and psychedelic rock. This led to collaborations with rappers like Nas, Fat Joe, Jadakiss, and Ghostface Killah.

In 2004, Alchemist released his debut album “1st Infantry,” and his sophomore album “Chemical Warfare” in 2009, which featured contributions from Eminem, Pusha T, Talib Kweli and Twista. A slew of collaborative projects also followed, such as “Rare Chandeliers” with Action Bronson, “Alfredo” with Freddie Gibbs, and “Continuance” with Curren$y.

For this year’s final show, Alchemist delivers an exclusive mix that transports us back to 2000, a pivotal year marked by his move to New York, when he would cross paths with Mobb Deep’s Prodigy and Havoc. This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio is brought to you by @inthisdunya, a record label and creative management platform based in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Founded by Leon Hammarberg and Foad Hersi, the label has roots in Sweden’s live music and nightlife scenes, and is fast expanding from its Nordic origins to a global stage. The collective has held events in Paris, London, Copenhagen, and Oslo, with a forward-thinking roster of acts like Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter @wwvenus, Gothenburg multi-hyphenate Raghd, and alternative rapper @faaka. This culminated in the debut of Dunya Fest in 2024, which welcomed over 2000 attendees and 20 international live music acts to the label’s home city.

For this month’s episode, In This Dunya’s founders created a mix alongside close collaborator MC Hache, spanning alternative R&B, dance, and hip-hop, featuring original label releases as well as new demos and some special, exclusive edits.
