A remix of Postmodern Jukebox's remix of Rhianna's song 'Only girl in the world'. I took some of the piano elements and the usable vocals from their version for this.

The story I made for this song is that a man goes to a jazz bar and doesn't enjoy it. He then zones in and out during songs, making up his own music in his head as a sort of entertainment. I would like to state that I quite enjoy jazz bars and that this is just an idea. It was going to be a full blown album, but unfortunately I have run out of time to make the rest of it in the foreseeable future.

I think the hardest thing about this track was working with highly swung rhythms and trying to make them work with the track I was remixing. There was a lot of masking of straight rhythms in favor of swing. I liked the jazz vibe with the drums as it inspired me to work a lot more with the rhythms of snares and be a bit more experimental / adventurous. I didn't feel bound to any sort of structure, not that I should when I'm making music or try to be normally, but I think every producer does to some extent, even if it's only small.

I really enjoyed making the soundscapes for this, so working with the numerous clap tracks, voice tracks, and so on. Panning different tracks and making sound real was a challenge, not that I think I pulled it off entirely, but I did OK. I highly recommend www.freesound.org to anyone looking for user submitted recordings of sounds. A brilliant and free resource! 

I wrote some of the piano parts in this and all of the rhodes. I tried to match the piano sound of the remix to my vst piano, and this was a challenge and a half. If you listen carefully, well not even carefully (it's pretty damn obvious - especially in the solo), you can tell which is which.

Initially I made the first 32 bars of piano and then I started messing around with vocals on top of it. I had this Kelly Clarkson acapella just sat around and plonked it on. I was fairly lucky that I didn't have to make many changes with what I already had to make it all in key and stuff. Some of the chords sound a bit weird, but eventually I fell in love with these 'mistakes'! Her backing singers could have been a bit more considerate to my remix needs but whatever! In the jazz world somewhere they probably form real and coherent chords haha. The bass was also pretty fun to work with, especially putting the bends and drops in the pitch. Listen out for them. I think they add a certain soul /funk element. ANYWAY Rambling Randy is signing out. Hope you guys enjoy!

I wrote this piece whilst thinking about how our world is going today; crazy levels of government surveillance, war on every corner of the globe and terrorism being a constant threat. A bit morbid, I know, but I liked where the piece was going.

The sounds in the background are that of a cafe, I imagine it to be a dingy joint in a London back alley, and the initial Sky news broadcast about the London bombings (to create the full dark cafe and rubbish telly scenario). Also, I put in some syncopated drum loops as if the radio was going too just for extra effect.

I hope you get the same feelings as when I wrote it. It's a reflective piece :)

Not my usual style, but I'm jumping feet first in to other genres to try and broaden my production knowledge and perhaps incorporate some new techniques and sounds in to my music and therefore keep it fresh / develop my own style further. 

I tried to emulate the more funky glitch hop as that's something I really enjoy listening to. I tried to move away from my regular jazz style chords and synthesizers and worked more with sample manipulation and clean production techniques.

This one's another Glitch Hop track. I made it with a guy called @morphing-washington (check him out!) and it was really fun to work on. Hope you guys enjoy it! 

We've been making this track for well over a month now, tinkering with little sounds and effects, to make the song fresh. It's got a funky twang in it and I personally really enjoyed working with the rhythms of the synths. Morphing Washington made some brilliant leads such as the one right at the beginning that sounds like a guitar. I think we both learnt quite a bit about production from each other and there's definitely more tracks in the pipeline!

This one's a deep dubstep piece, based on the original sounds that got me in to dubstep. Reggae influenced chord stabs, 2step half time rhythms and deep sine based bass. I was messing around and the Groove Armada vocal fitted in nicely, in the end I was reluctant to remove it so I didn't! It's a long track and slightly more progressive than my usual stuff. Hope you enjoy!

Two People - Jean Jacques (Ochtone Remix) [Free download in "buy" link]

After a bit of a break I'm back on the music making wagon! This one's a free Post-Dubstep track sampling the epic speech from 'Network'. I had fun with this one and even played my own guitar riffs and solos in to it. The background voice is actually one of the samples from Veela's soundpack which I chopped looped and pitch shifted. The drums are from one of Beardyman's youtube videos and again chopped and arranged. It sound a bit flat in the midrange I think but it's the best I could do with it whilst working around all my other stuff that I do. Hope you guys enjoy it!

Made this with my midi keyboard (recent addition) and I've got to say, MAN I LOVE THOSE MOD WHEELS. Also gotta say a big thank you to pitch bend. Where have you been all my life? So yeah, I can now finally put my classical / jazz music knowledge to some proper use! 
 
This tune started out deep and soulful, heading in a dark direction and then one day I got on a 90s classic garage spree and the direction of this tune entirely changed. I wrote the ending to the song way before the middle parts ironically, hence why it chops up to something deep again, but I kept it, less through laziness (although that was a factor), more because I wanted to end on a somber note and something that reflected my original pathway for this song.
 
The drums are bodied out with a standard Breakbeat  (softly low cut at 300hz) which worked out quite nicely. I was looking for new drum sounds, tried Breakbeats (more as a joke than seriousness) out of curiosity and to my surprise it worked. Who knows, maybe i'll produce a Breakbeat track in the future.

Ochtone - 1971 [Free Download]

I really enjoyed working this piece and I hope you like it too! It's not common for me to make Dubstep styled beats these days, not that I actively try to avoid it, it just doesn't come naturally to me often. 

I wanted to do a remix as I haven't done one for a while, and everything I've been writing myself recently has come to a dead end. 'Mala - Alicia' was one of the first Dubstep tracks I heard (and subsequently introduced me to Alicia Keys who I'm a massive fan of now). Ironically I'm now heading back to this deep jazz kind of sound after exploring a lot of different things through my current musical life, so it seemed fitting to remix this tune. 

I utilised both 'Mala - Alicia' and the original 'Alicia Keys - Feelin' Me Feelin' U', Mala's for the instrumental parts, the original for the vocals. I tried not to butcher it too much (as can often happen with remixes of classics), but also not to recreate the tune melody for melody. Enjoy the free download!

A bit about the production process.

I recorded the piano from my phone as I don't currently have my midi keyboard on me or any recording equipment. + 80db of gain later you could hear it! Get in. It took a lot of EQ play to get rid of the background noise out of the recording and isolate the main sounds. Even then the piano still sounds a bit mid driven. The joys of phone recording!

The soundscape is created with a 6 second rain sample looped which has a small LFO on both the volume and panning to create an almost circular sound, a sine wave with chorus, reverb, and an automated detune / pitch bend, and a bunch of recordings of cars and lorries on the high street which I've low cut to around 150hz.
